"Talk about rotten luck—not even one successful attempt," Chen Yao grumbled, unable to hide her frustration.
While she lacked the detached, carefree nature of her aunt Wang Yuyao or her cousin Su Jiaojiao, she possessed a resilient spirit. After taking a moment to compose herself, the fluttering sensation Wang Yue stirred in her heart remained, yet her initial bashfulness had begun to fade.
Wang Yuqi turned her attention to Ling Xueyan, asking, "Sister-in-law, how many times did it take for you and Xiao Chen to succeed?"
"Xiao Chen managed it on his very first try, though I required several attempts," Ling Xueyan answered with a gentle smile. "There is no reason to be impatient; with enough practice, you will surely succeed as well."
"I am not in any rush. I can practice perfectly fine on my own without him," Wang Yuqi replied with stubborn pride.
Shen Siying let out a soft laugh and said, "It is no problem if you didn't get it on the first go; there will be plenty of opportunities to try again later. Lunch should be served by now; let us head to the dining room."
It is a common saying that when a son-in-law visits his mother-in-law’s home, he feels as restless as an ant on a hot griddle, desperate to depart. In his previous life, Wang Yue might have shared that sentiment. Now, however, he felt entirely at ease.
The three great families of Jinling were all home to him, and these women were his closest kin. The deep affection he had developed for them over time had carved their images into his soul, making them an inseparable part of his existence. Consequently, there was no sense of distance or awkwardness between them.
Except for Shen Siying, the women of the Chen family were tasting such divine cuisine for the first time. With Wang Yue present, the mood was even more lighthearted, and their appetites were naturally hearty.
Once lunch concluded, Ling Xueyan and Chen Chen went back to the Chen family estate. Though many "business" tasks supposedly awaited them, they were actually heading off to sleep. Wang Yue had thoroughly exhausted them that morning; despite his internal Qi helping them recover, certain forms of weariness cannot be erased by energy alone, requiring genuine rest.
Wang Yue did not accompany them, however. After the meal, he escorted Chen Xi into the garden behind the residence. He felt a lingering sense of guilt toward her, yet he could not bring himself to abandon the other women in his life for her sake. The only thing he could do was dedicate as much time to her as possible.
Hand in hand, they strolled quietly through the garden pavilions. No words were exchanged, but the silence between them spoke volumes. Having been close since childhood and knowing they were destined for one another from a young age, they shared a bond of familiarity similar to that of an old married couple. Often, a single look was enough to convey their thoughts without needing to speak.
After walking for a time, they took a seat beneath a tree. Suddenly, Chen Xi inquired, "What is the current situation between you and Chu Mo?"
Unsure of the intent behind her question, Wang Yue replied honestly, "As you know, I was out at sea and only returned yesterday. I haven't had the chance to see her yet."
"Did you not even bother to call her while you were away?" Chen Xi pressed.
Wang Yue nodded, a flash of guilt crossing his face. While at sea, he had been occupied celebrating with his aunt and the others, leaving no room for phone calls. He realized he truly wasn't a model boyfriend.
Chen Xi looked at him and said, "Since you’ve made the choice to pursue Chu Mo, you must treat her properly. Do not be the kind of person who gives up and abandons her halfway through."
Startled, Wang Yue asked, "Why are you taking her side? Could it be..."
"Could it be what?" Chen Xi snapped irritably before letting out a sigh. "I would rather you be a playboy than be irresponsible. If we hadn't been engaged since childhood, I truly wouldn't want anything to do with you."
Knowing that Chen Xi was merely being stubborn, Wang Yue immediately pulled her into a firm embrace. "Xiao Xi, I must tell you again: in this life and every life to follow, I will always love you."
Before she could utter a response, he pressed his lips against hers. The small spark of annoyance in Chen Xi’s heart vanished instantly under the heat of the kiss. She wrapped her arms around his neck, returning the gesture with passion.
As he tasted her sweetness, Wang Yue’s hands began to wander over her body—it was finally time for his official fiancée to transition into a real woman. Wang Yue was now a master of seduction, and because Chen Xi loved him unconditionally, she offered no resistance. Soon, her body felt flushed and weak, her breathing turning shallow and quick.
Just as Wang Yue was about to proceed further, his ears twitched. He snatched a fallen leaf from the grass and flicked it toward a nearby sound with a sharp snap.
"Ouch!"
A pained yelp rang out from the distance.
Startled out of the romantic moment, Chen Xi broke the kiss and looked toward the noise. About twenty meters away, hidden among the flower beds, Chen Peng was clutching her forehead and glaring at Wang Yue.
Realizing her younger sister had witnessed their intimate moment, Chen Xi’s face burned with shame. She demanded sharply, "Xiao Peng, what are you doing sneaking around there?"
"I... I was just walking by! I wasn't spying on you!" Chen Peng insisted, puffing out her cheeks as she approached, still scowling at Wang Yue.
"Wang Yue, you bully! Why did you hit me?"
Wang Yue and Chen Xi shared a helpless look; there was no point in trying to hide things from this stubborn girl. "I was just tossing something aside. How was I to know you’d be standing right there?" Wang Yue said, rolling his eyes.
"Second sister, look at how he treats me," Chen Peng whined, squeezing in next to Chen Xi and clinging to her arm. She acted spoiled, tilting her head to show off her forehead.
"Can you two stop fighting the moment you see each other?" Chen Xi sighed, though she felt a bit of pity seeing the small red mark on her sister's skin. "Wang Yue, why did you have to use so much force?"
Force? He had held back significantly. The leaf hitting Chen Peng's head was barely a tap; it was physically impossible for it to cause a bruise. That little red bump was clearly something the little troublemaker had rubbed into existence to get sympathy.
However, Wang Yue decided not to call her out. He placed his hand gently on Chen Peng’s forehead and smiled. "Fine, I will be more careful next time."
