Much to Vritra's astonishment, the status window suddenly appeared. He scanned through it and felt a jolt of surprise.
'Human? The folks around here are humans as well... wait, have I turned into one too? Regardless, it looks like I need to boost my stats somehow.' He pondered inwardly and muttered aloud.
"Check your status panels."
They had overlooked that too. Vritra glanced out once more, curious if he could view the mutant's stats as well.

(Agility: 5.0)
(Endurance: 7.8)
(Spiritual: 1.0)

"That mutant packs nearly eight times the strength and durability, plus it's quicker on its feet. Taking it down seems utterly impossible." Vritra concluded.
He hadn't yet grasped the full scale of power gaps from these stats.
Yet without a single ability at his disposal, defeating it bordered on the impossible.
His eyes then shifted to the sole shut door amid the other three units, and Divine's warning echoed in his thoughts.
'Be as ruthless as you can, and remember, mutants aren't the sole threat.'
Surveying the floor dotted with bloody tracks, it was obvious the occupants had slain and ransacked before.
Thus, all traces of doubt vanished from his mind in an instant.
Vritra grabbed Vanessa's weapon, a snapped iron pipe.
"Honey, what do you have in mind?" Vanessa inquired, her voice laced with concern. For the moment, they were powerless to act.
Their stats hovered mostly below 1.
"Just testing a theory." Vritra gripped the baseball bat and pipe in one hand while scooping up a splintered table leg.
With that, he swung the door open again.
After a quick scan to confirm the shadowy corridor was empty, he hurled the wooden piece away from the mutant's direction.
He slammed the door shut in haste.
Vritra held his breath, listening intently, but no additional noises followed. Apparently, the mutant ignored sounds like that.
Letting out a shaky sigh of tension, he cracked the door and crept toward the sealed entrance ahead.
Within the neighboring unit, four rugged men, marred by multiple gashes, lounged on the floor, savoring bowls of rice.
"Damn it, Lukas, you shouldn't have offed her so fast—we could've enjoyed ourselves first." The guy sporting a headscarf grumbled. It had been ages since they'd tasted rice.
"That old hag? For real?"
Lukas, the youngest-looking one, retorted with clear revulsion.
"Aw, come on, desperate times call for desperate measures. It's been forever since we stumbled on a woman. Hell, scoring rice and people in this dump was a stroke of luck."
Another chimed in, heaving a regretful breath.
"That's beside the point—we gotta slip out without drawing that grinning bastard's attention. That thing's a nightmare."
The last man interjected, shuddering at the memory of spotting it.
Good thing the mutant was deaf, or they'd be goners already.
"Let's wrap this up and bail. I'll activate my stealth skill to mask our pre—"
Mid-sentence from Lukas, a clatter echoed from the far end of the hall.
"What the hell was that?" The scarfed man scowled, and abruptly
KNOCK KNOCK
Frantic raps hammered the door, followed by a desperate plea.
"P-Please, help me out! I'm begging you, let me in—that monster's gonna finish me off…"
It was a young woman's tearful voice.
The quartet snapped to attention, exchanging glances brimming with greed.
"I'm claiming her first—you lot can wait your turn!" The eldest leaped up suddenly.
But the scarfed man, empowered by his mutation that amplified his brawn to a stat of 5, shoved him aside effortlessly.
"Fat chance—I'm going first. You'll queue up, heh, and trust me, I won't wrap up quick."
The scarfed man grinned, his facial scars twisting wider.
"Hah, she'll be half-dead by the time you're through—you're way too rough."
The fourth fellow shook his head.
Still, no one could best him in combat, leaving them helpless.
The scarfed man let out a soft laugh and neared the door, though he paused to verify safety first.
Mutants came in all varieties, after all.
Squinting one eye, he peered through the spyhole, only to furrow his brow at the sight of a bald dude by the facing door.
He scanned further but spotted no woman.
In that instant, Vritra, crouched by the frame, jammed the metal rod straight into the peephole.
BANG
SWISH
The rod speared through the scarfed man's eye, eliciting an immediate howl of torment, though Vritra missed the kill as the man jerked away fast.
"What happened?" Lukas and the rest sprang up, horrified by the mangled mess of his face.
One eye was utterly destroyed.
"Arghh, DAMN IT!! Those scum—they're ambushing us!!" The scarfed man bellowed and snarled, rage boiling within him.
The foursome cast aside all else as vengeful fury surged through them. Who dared strike at them?
With Vritra still in the hall, they ignored risks and charged out, flinging the door wide to strike.
Vritra spun on his heels and bolted for the other apartment, but just before diving in, he lobbed a table leg at the mutant.
BANG
The wood smacked the mutant squarely on the skull, making it recoil with a snarl.
By then, Vritra had bolted the door and piled hefty items against it.
As the group retreated.
At that very second, the facing door burst open, and the four stormed forth, primed to slaughter the attackers.
"W-Wait, something's off—I-I feel it…" The eldest clutched his head, his danger-sensing power kicking in abruptly.
GRAAARRRR!!
Lukas, the scarfed man, and the pair froze at the doorway upon hearing the bone-chilling roar, their limbs locking up.
"Sh-Shit, we got played!!"
Dawn finally broke, but too late. They scrambled back inside, yet the mutant ripped the door apart with ease.
Heart racing and breaths ragged, Vritra caught the noises of the beast and flesh ripping asunder.
The four men's panicked yells faded after mere seconds, restoring an eerie calm.
Soon, the grotesque munching of the mutant devouring the humans filled the air.
Before long, the mutant lumbered off post-feast on the four bodies, trailing a thick odor of gore and meat.
Vritra lingered a moment more before easing up slightly.
"Haa, it's headed down to the floors below now." He whispered softly.
His wives wore somber looks. How could they confront horrors like this when others had surged so far in their mutations?
"Stay put here—we'll scout that spot. No threats left, probably.
Though the blood smell could lure mutants any minute." Vritra announced, stepping out with Shitless and Onest trailing.
Upon entering the adjacent apartment, horror twisted their faces.
The four remains sprawled mangled and shattered, guts splayed everywhere.
"…Quick, rummage around." He urged, then approached a less damaged body.
He dropped to one knee to examine it for any valuables the owner might've had.
But as his fingers brushed the corpse, a barrage of notifications flashed before him.
[A mutant corpse has been detected!]
