Vritra had been heading toward the window when he spotted Teresa collapsing.
"TESS!!" He swiftly caught her before she hit the ground, cradling her in his arms while calling her name repeatedly in worry.
He carried her over to the bed and placed her down with care, then placed a hand on her forehead.
"She's running a fever?" Vritra was shocked by the scorching heat radiating from her skin.
As a lord rank expert, how could Teresa suffer from something as ordinary as an illness?
Her breaths came in quick gasps, and upon closer inspection, small spots resembling freckles dotted her cheeks and arms.
"What's going on here?" He scowled, his heart heavy with concern; saving anyone else paled in comparison when his wife faced peril.
Yasmine, Fiona, Diana, and Vanessa hurried over to examine the signs of her condition.
"She definitely looks sick—could this tie back to those spores?" Yasmine wondered, her connection to her sister growing stronger by the moment.
"Spores? Yet none of the other lords we've encountered showed any effects whatsoever," Fiona replied, her voice laced with worry.
"Plus, she's been shielded by all those honey barriers the whole time; I doubt a single spore even reached her," Vanessa murmured.
Vritra rubbed her hand gently as he sat next to her, scanning for additional clues.
"But have you overlooked her well-known title?" Diana pointed out, prompting everyone to recall it.
The Fate Stealer, the unluckiest yet most compassionate witch.
"Do you believe this stems from the misfortune woven into her destiny?" Vritra inquired, his eyebrows knitting together.
"Yes, based on the stories I've heard, she draws misfortune like a magnet. So I suspect her state links to these abrupt shifts," Yasmine responded, before proposing:
"Maybe we should give her some healing potions to drink?"
"I doubt they'd make much difference right now," Diana countered, her expanded potion expertise giving her insight into illnesses and body mechanics.
"If I'm correct, she'll come around in a few hours, but without treatment, her slumber will drag on longer, and her strength will fade further," she explained, though certainty wasn't absolute.
"…" Vritra's anxiety deepened; how could they treat an unknown affliction?
The roots of those spores remained a total mystery, unclear if they arose naturally or from some deliberate act.
'Divine…' Vritra called out in desperation, but silence answered every time, fueling his frustration.
He raged most at his own failure to safeguard his loved ones.
"Is there… truly nothing we can do at this point?" he questioned in despair, drawing Teresa nearer in his embrace.
"Sigh, no, it's beyond our control—we just have to keep trying," Diana answered, sharing his sense of powerlessness.
…
After more than seven hours, Teresa's eyelids twitched at last.
Vritra, holding her close throughout, caught the movement right away.
At last, Teresa's eyes fluttered open, and she gazed about in bewilderment.
"Tess, how do you feel?" Vritra asked softly.
"What occurred?" She pressed a hand to her head, as though it ached.
"You passed out abruptly," Yasmine explained while assessing her state.
"Passed out? I'm not sure why, but I feel drained everywhere…" Teresa replied faintly.
Glancing at her body, she spotted the freckle-like markings on her arms.
"Drained… could absorbing power from that planet core help her?" Vritra suggested, recalling the item.
He didn't pause for replies, drawing energy from the core in the adjacent room and channeling it to Teresa.
"Absorb it and let me know if it eases things," Vritra urged, clinging to any hope.
"Mhmm." Teresa agreed with a nod, her complexion ghostly pale. As she took in the energy, the discomfort eased somewhat, and vitality returned.
"It's helping a bit," Teresa noted after a pause, slipping into contemplation as pieces fell into place.
Sadness clouded her expression soon after, leading her to ask: "Is this due to my cursed fate? I- I'm scared you all might suffer because of me—"
"Shh, just rest easy now—no pointless worries. We'll definitely uncover a fix," Vritra assured her firmly, despite his inner turmoil and fear.
Teresa sensed her fate's misfortune had drawn this ailment, likely connected to the spores.
"Husband, did you install that device yet?" she inquired, struck by a sudden memory.
"No, not yet." Vritra denied, offering a soft smile.
"I'm improving, so go set it up—it'll benefit us all immensely," she encouraged.
Vritra agreed with a nod, and minutes later, he took to the skies, his spirit weighed down.
He ascended aimlessly, starting the setup as his thoughts swirled with doubts.
Was there truly no way for him to aid her?
Vritra summoned his status panel, scanning his skills that now appeared utterly pointless.
He scrolled through to the bottom without spotting anything helpful, then halted, his eyes drifting upward.
They fixed on a single entry.
"This could work, but is it safe?" he pondered. Selecting it might rescue Teresa, yet risk his own well-being.
Uncertainty lingered on whether it'd provide lasting relief or succeed at all.
Yet for the sake of his lovely, gentle wife Teresa, Vritra embraced the gamble.
He finished the preparations swiftly, then infused a massive surge of energy.
An unseen barrier soon expanded everywhere, not just halting and dissolving the ice but repelling the spores, ejecting them from the planet.
It also drew out those already on the ground.
Vritra channeled ever greater amounts, the effort draining him; enveloping the whole world demanded over three-quarters of his mana.
The task spanned more than five hours, but surveying the scene, Vritra watched the snow melt away.
The terrain cleared, and the spores ceased spreading.
"Her gift is incredible—truly a prodigy," Vritra murmured, shaking his head; both sisters shone as masters in their domains.
He surveyed the area briefly, confirming all was secure, before Vritra chose to depart.
The barrier would endure at least a month, requiring renewal afterward unless Teresa enhanced its duration.
Speeding back, he neared home, where the women remained gathered around Teresa.
"Husband, is she okay?" Yennefer's voice echoed in his thoughts unexpectedly.
Though unfamiliar with her yet, Yennefer recognized the need to bond as family.
"Not entirely; we don't grasp what sparked these events or how to counter them," Vritra shared.
"Hmm, can you briefly recount what unfolded after I vanished?" Yennefer requested; Vanessa had filled her in on much, but curiosities persisted.
"Sure." Vritra assented and eased his flight, recounting from right after his feigned demise.
He withheld nothing, revealing every detail.
"Oh, the Divine's gone quiet now?" Yennefer queried, surprise coloring her words.
"Yes, but I'm certain he'll aid her—Tess is his sibling; I can't fathom his silence," Vritra stated.
"This is troubling indeed—any ideas brewing?" Yennefer probed, knowing Vritra's devotion to kin.
"A bit, yeah." Vritra replied evasively as he landed.
Their chat extended briefly before he reentered the room.
"Any updates?" Vritra inquired.
"Nothing major; we're monitoring her closely. That core's energy is offering some relief, though." Diana reported.
But it merely delayed the illness, not healing it.
"Could you all give us some privacy for a moment?" Vritra requested gravely.
His wives yearned for news of discoveries but complied, leaving the pair solitary.
Teresa rested on the bed, eyes shut, steadily drawing in the energy.
His voice prompted her to open them feebly, meeting his gaze; she fretted the sickness might spread if they neared.
"Husband, we can't tell if this illness is cont—" Teresa started, but Vritra silenced her with a finger to her soft lips.
"Shh, no talking." He instructed, settling beside her to stroke her hair tenderly.
"How's life treating you these days? Any regrets about marrying me?" he wondered.
"…" Teresa remained quiet, drawing a light laugh from Vritra.
"Okay, speak now." He permitted, planting a kiss on her brow.
"Regret it? Never—this marriage is my greatest joy. Every instant since has been blissful; I… love you." Teresa confessed, a blush rising.
"At first, I resisted this union fiercely, yet I never imagined my hidden bride would prove so remarkable. I'm grateful fate unfolded as it did.
Your compassion, your timid purity, your smile, your aroma. Haha, even your fierce side—I adore it all." Vritra expressed deliberately.
Words like these might once seem forced, but now their feelings resonated deeply.
Shyness lingered for Teresa, but his affectionate words filled her with delight, banishing pain and ache in an instant.
"I love you, Tess." Vritra murmured, bending to meet her full, dark lips with his.
