The surroundings left Vritra gaping in astonishment, as the abrupt transformation stunned the entire group.
"I-Is this normal?" Yennefer gazed at the bizarre array of altered beasts, sensing that the world had truly shifted during her absence.
"Of course not, this is all new to me as well." Vritra answered, inhaling the chilly breeze while he steadied his nerves a little.
They kept soaring onward, absorbing every alteration; the effects extended beyond mere animals and foliage.
The eight companions halted abruptly when a thunderous crash echoed from within a dwelling, accompanied by a potent metallic tang of blood in the atmosphere.
"…" Moments later, a horrifying shape appeared, gnawing on human remains, with two mangled corpses sprawled next to the deformed individual.
One corpse belonged to a male, the other to a female, suggesting the trio had once formed a household; muffled cries of terror drifted from the building's interior.
Vritra scowled, realizing the world was truly descending into chaos.
The altered human had morphed into a hideous beast, and upon detecting the subtle noise, it whipped around toward the structure.
It dashed madly into the home as the youths concealed within wailed in panic.
Yet prior to the creature reaching them, its skull burst apart.
Vritra scanned the area below, hovering above a settlement where similar horrors unfolded everywhere.
"Husband, this…" Teresa gawked in horror at the brutal and savage display.
Having lost their minds and become beasts, these folks were slaughtering and consuming their own kin.
They resembled the undead, yet far more hideous, formidable, and lethal.
Teresa, the gentlest and most pitiable soul alive, experienced a pang in her chest from the tragedy. She yearned to aid them, though confronting these twisted humans and creatures across the lands would prove immensely challenging.
"Let's press on, we must gather more intel before acting." Vritra declared, his face etched with severity.
For the moment, he employed dust control to eliminate the warped humans, though this approach was far from ideal.
Additional humans might transform at any time, and the savage beasts could invade the settlement too.
The survivors were already struggling against the frost, and this nightmare only worsened their plight.
During their return journey, Vritra alongside his spouses dispatched numerous aberrant beings, uncertain if restoration was possible.
Yet safeguarding the vulnerable mattered greatly now, and despite their indifference to strangers, they couldn't remain idle amid the massacre of countless innocents.
Soon enough, they reached the House of Darkness, each one bewildered and appalled.
"Hubby, could you inquire with Divine about this madness?" Yasmine requested, aware now that Divine was her sibling, yet lacking her former recollections, she harbored no emotions for him.
"I'll give it a shot." Vritra agreed with a nod, perceiving that such upheavals gripped the entire globe.
'Divine?' He mentally summoned, only to meet silence, which irritated and enraged him.
After several more attempts, Vritra merely shook his head in resignation.
"We can uncover the reasons later; our priority should be halting those abominations." Diana stated, gripped by helplessness, refusing to stay passive.
"Given that these odd transformations stem from the spores, we ought to prevent them from touching any life form first." Vanessa mused aloud after reflection.
"Teresa, didn't you labor on something similar?" Fiona directed her gaze at Teresa and inquired.
"Yes, but it's still unfinished." Teresa responded, her expression tinged with sorrow.
"Husband, beneath the Golden Moon headquarters lies a mechanism capable of inducing temporary slumber in everyone, provided sufficient power is supplied." Yennefer interjected then.
Having once belonged to Golden Moon, she possessed extensive knowledge of its secrets.
"Right, even a brief postponement would grant us moments to devise a plan." Fiona affirmed with a nod.
"Alright, we'll head there immediately. Yenni, accompany me. Tess, what's the timeframe for readying the shield?" Vritra asked with utmost gravity.
He suspected the Divine Kage, the sole dominant faction remaining, wouldn't assist the masses.
"A minimum of one day, and it'll demand certain conditions even so." Teresa answered following brief contemplation.
"Will that gadget induce sleep lasting a full day?" Vritra probed, receiving Yennefer's affirmative nod.
"Fine, we're departing now." Vritra grasped Yennefer's hand, a gesture far removed from their past intimacy.
"We'll secure the vicinity for the time being; oh, and why not deploy all the sentries? We've got more than four thousand lord-level knights at our disposal." Fiona proposed.
"Agreed, handle that, but as we don't know if recovery is feasible for them, aim to subdue them without killing for the present." Vritra directed before pivoting away, entrusting the estate and forces to Yasmine, Vanessa, Diana, and Fiona.
"Honey, stay safe." Vanessa urged from afar, her concern overriding her awareness of his might, as the events felt utterly unreal.
"I'll manage, Mom." Vritra inclined his head to his partners and then vanished.
Teresa sprang into action without delay, as did the rest.
…
Vritra and Yennefer materialized near the primary Golden Moon outpost, though with all six leaders deceased, turmoil reigned within.
Numerous affiliates remained, those absent from the wedding. Vritra ignored them entirely and trailed Yennefer.
Thanks to the Lost ability, no one could detect him, even as he brushed past.
The apparatus's site was cleverly concealed; shortly, they accessed a chamber housing a metal effigy.
Yennefer drifted ahead promptly and guided Vritra on its activation.
"Husband, begin by raising its arm exactly eleven centimeters, then angle it at thirty degrees. The access point lies within."
In short order, the featureless figure positioned itself before Vritra, arms extended skyward.
Simultaneously, across countless sites, the earth quaked and split, unveiling soaring spires that ascended.
This elaborate setup astonished Vritra; Golden Moon commanded tremendous influence indeed.
In mere moments, thousands of lofty structures topped with upside-down cap shapes emerged, vaguely resembling enlarged communication antennas.
Vritra inquired next: "What's our next step?"
"Next, we infuse mana via its arm into the statue. However, the power from a dozen lords might fall short for full operation; do you possess any artifacts—"
Yennefer's words cut off as Vritra pressed his hands to the statue's and unleashed a torrent of energy.
"Hold on, husband, this risks danger; you shouldn't—" Alarm flashed across Yennefer's features as she sought to halt him, then halted herself.
An immense surge of mana poured into the figure, leaving her stunned. She remained unaware of his recent enhancement.
Every tower hummed in unison, emitting a piercing ultrasonic wave.
Lords remained immune, while ordinary humans, animals, and sentient flora all collapsed into unconsciousness.
Vritra sustained the link for several minutes, untroubled by his reserves. He released only once the activation concluded.
"Are you alright?" Yennefer approached Vritra, the crisis averted, her eyes lingering on him with quiet yearning.
"I am." Vritra offered a subtle smile, exhaling in relief.
