A sudden laugh escaped Chu Mo: "You actually have feelings for me, don’t you?"
"Indeed," Wang Yue conceded without a moment's pause, nodding his head in agreement.
"Then tell me, what is it about me that you like?" Chu Mo pushed further.
"It is difficult to put into words; I simply find myself liking you," Wang Yue explained.
"In my view, if a person can list the exact reasons they like someone, it isn't true 'liking' anymore—it's merely admiration. For instance, I admire your looks, your physique, your sense of independence, and your devotion to your family. However, those aren't the reasons for my feelings. Plenty of girls possess beauty and good character, but admiration doesn't equate to love. If I must explain my feelings for you, I would call it an indefinable sensation."
Chu Mo felt her heart race at Wang Yue’s lengthy confession.
Furthermore, Wang Yue projected an aura of complete sincerity, making his words feel incredibly persuasive.
To be honest, even Wang Yue was impressed by his own ability to voice such pure emotions while showering Chu Mo with praise. It appeared he truly possessed the talent to be a "romantic saint."
After a moment of quiet, Chu Mo pivoted the conversation. "You mentioned earlier that helping me decline this marriage would benefit the three major families. What exactly did you mean?"
"Ever since the events of three years ago, the factions aligned with the Zhang family have grown incredibly arrogant. We’ve been searching for a reason to suppress them," Wang Yue admitted candidly. "Your current predicament offers us the perfect pretext."
Had Chu Mo been a cynical person, she might have felt manipulated by the three major families. However, she wasn't spiteful; she understood that Wang Yue's primary goal was to assist her. Any one of the three major families was more powerful than the Zhangs, and since they were allied, they could have found any excuse to strike if they truly wanted to.
"I appreciate everyone looking out for me, but..." Chu Mo trailed off, hesitating.
Wang Yue sighed internally, thinking she still couldn't move past the obstacles created by the Chu family. He wondered how she couldn't see that if the three major families moved against the Zhangs, marrying into that family now would only bring her ruin.
Then, Chu Mo laughed softly. "If I let you win me over that easily, wouldn't it be quite embarrassing for me?"
"What should I do then?" Wang Yue inquired.
"I've already decided to call off the engagement with the Zhang family for the sake of the Chu family's safety, so you don't need to go to such extremes," Chu Mo stated. "If your feelings are genuine, then pursue me properly. If you manage to win my heart, I am even willing to be your concubine—how does that sound?"
"Deal," Wang Yue smiled back. "Though I must warn you, I'm not very experienced in courting girls. I hope you'll forgive my lack of skill."
"That is precisely why I like it," Chu Mo said with a playful wink. "If you were a smooth talker, you'd be just like my father, and I wouldn't want that at all."
Wang Yue felt a pang of guilt, knowing he was actually quite similar to her father—perhaps even worse.
As they spoke, Su Jin-er and the others returned with a large spread of food.
The sharp-eyed Su Jin-er noticed that Chu Mo's demeanor had shifted entirely; the gloom that had previously followed her had vanished.
"What were you two discussing? You seem so much happier now," Su Jin-er teased.
"I've decided to reject the Zhang family's proposal. I refuse to throw myself into that fire pit. Why wouldn't I be happy?" Chu Mo replied with a grin.
"What brought on this sudden change of heart?" Su Xiu-er asked, surprised. She glanced at Wang Yue with a smirk. "Could it be because of..."
"Not at all! If the three major families are planning to move against the Zhangs, I can't let the Chu family be dragged down with them, can I?" Chu Mo said, rolling her eyes.
"I see," Su Xiu-er muttered, feeling slightly let down. she had hoped Chu Mo was falling for Wang Yue.
As her best friend, she genuinely wanted Chu Mo to be with her cousin. Not only would they be family, but it would also satisfy her own complicated feelings. Without realizing it, Su Xiu-er had developed her own affection for Wang Yue. Since they were cousins and couldn't be together, she hoped her friend could fulfill that role instead.
Su Jin-er and Su Xiu-er were different in many ways, but in this moment, their thoughts were perfectly aligned.
Regretfully, Su Jin-er remarked, "I thought Xiao Yue had influenced you... Does that mean he has no chance?"
"Not quite. I've given him permission to pursue me," Chu Mo said, giving Wang Yue a sincere smile.
Hearing this, Su Jin-er and Su Xiu-er looked at each other, both feeling a sense of relief.
Unless a woman is a heartless manipulator, giving a man the green light to pursue her usually signifies she already has feelings for him. Since anyone has the right to try and win someone over anyway, explicitly mentioning it was a clear signal. However, alongside their relief, both women felt a twinge of jealousy, as if something precious was being taken away.
Only Su Jiaojiao remained indifferent. With her mouth full of food, she mumbled, "All this talk about chasing people is boring. Eating is much better. Are you guys going to join in, or should I just finish everything?"
The four of them laughed and began their meal together.
While Wang Yue’s group enjoyed their dinner at the buffet, Zhang Qingtian and his followers entered a different establishment.
"Chu Mo, you little bitch, I'll make you pay! And Wang Yue, we'll settle our score soon enough!" Inside a private room, Zhang Qingtian took out his rage on a chair, smashing it with a single blow.
His men remained silent. They had watched their Young Master get humiliated and hadn't dared to retaliate. They knew that speaking up now would only result in them becoming targets for his anger.
After venting his frustration on the furniture, Zhang Qingtian finally cooled down. "Is there a way to reach the Chen family?"
"The Zhang family doesn't have any ties with the Chens, so it might be difficult," one subordinate answered cautiously.
Zhang Qingtian's brow furrowed. "You can't even deliver a simple message?"
"Delivering a message is possible," the subordinate clarified. "Young Master, what are you planning?"
"Send word to Chen Xi of the Chen family. Tell her that her fiancé is out with another woman," Zhang Qingtian said, a cruel smile forming on his face.
"Young Master, please reconsider," his men pleaded. "This could provoke both the Chen and Wang families. The fallout would be massive."
"How massive? Will they kill me?" Zhang Qingtian spat. "I've heard Chen Xi has a vicious temper. Let them tear each other apart first. Once our family secures the deal with Tianhai, these 'three major families of Jinling' will be nothing but garbage to us!"
"You are brilliant, Young Master. I will handle it at once," another subordinate said, pulling out his device to make the call.
