The Conquerors Path Chapter 984 - 982-Just A Rest.

"So what happened?"
Ralph inquired while we took our seats together, him staring directly at me, and Athena staying right beside me to ensure I was okay. The ordeal had terrified her deeply, so I allowed her to remain close.
"It’s complicated. I had to flip all the major levers when everything unfolded this way."
With that, I began explaining the entire ordeal to Ralph, starting from the initial events and covering every detail up to the conclusion, organizing it all in a clear sequence. As I continued, their astonishment grew more evident with each revelation.
I avoided diving into unnecessary parts, instead presenting a concise summary with the key facts that mattered.
"Then I employed a unique technique to make it seem like I was still sleeping as I hurried back here. I required some downtime. Besides, you grasp why I must appear unconscious, don’t you?"
Ralph nodded in agreement at my explanation. Being sharp individuals, both of them realized that my approach was the smartest move to minimize any severe retaliation.
"So your family believes you’re still out cold?"
Ralph questioned, arching an eyebrow, and I could only shake my head with a heavy sigh in response.
"It has to be this way. Authenticity is crucial for the plan to succeed. Otherwise, complications would pile up. Moreover, this shields them too, despite how much it pains me to cause them worry."
My face grew somber as I uttered those words, appearing genuinely tormented by the necessity of such deception.
"Don’t fret, you won’t face this alone. I’m here for you, and so are the rest of us. Remember, you’re doing this to safeguard them as well. Let go of the guilt weighing on you."
Athena comforted me, her hand gently stroking my back to ease my tension, her features brimming with empathy and care as she drew me nearer, embracing me firmly. In that moment, her ample bosom pressed against me, stirring my shadowy impulses that yearned to shatter her purity and claim her boldly in Ralph’s presence.
To twist that pure affection into a twisted indulgence for my cravings, yet I restrained that urge with my rational side, maintaining control. I couldn’t afford to slip now, especially not against Ralph. Thus, I suppressed those impulses deep within, though I still sensed the hidden yearnings and shifts in Ralph as well.
I shoved that corrupting influence aside once more, ignoring its tempting murmurs urging me to prey on their buried passions. Everyone harbors secret, forbidden longings in their souls. Often, these remain unfulfilled and sealed away. Countless souls perish without ever exploring them, but I possess the power to unleash such depths. Still, I refuse to wield it against those who truly care for me.
The most insidious aspect was the voice insisting I’d only be freeing them, that fulfillment of their deepest wants would bring true joy. But I recognized the peril; tugging that thread would plunge me into an abyss of darkness, so I fought to stay grounded and dismissed those notions.
"Thanks, your words lift me up a little."
I replied gratefully, then shifted my gaze to Ralph as I continued.
"I craved a respite from life as Austin Lionheart, constantly scrutinized by everyone. Additionally, this setup lets me handle several pressing matters."
"You’re referring to the war council issue, aren’t you?"
I confirmed with a nod at Ralph’s query.
"Exactly, isn’t this the ideal time to act? Their standing has hit rock bottom, and chaos reigns everywhere. A major upheaval could even reshape the war council entirely. We must exploit this turmoil to seize what I desire."
"Greater influence."
I agreed with a nod to Ralph’s words. As the saying goes, the surest path to defeating foes lies within their ranks. Gradually, I’ll erode their authority until they’re cornered, and when they finally target me, I’ll hold all the reins. As Rex, I’m well-versed in forging the initial ties there.
Now’s the moment to deploy my accumulated skills and traits to gain entry into those circles.
"Quiet down, everyone. Austin’s just returned exhausted. He deserves rest and a hearty meal from his big sister!"
"You’ve hit the nail on the head."
I responded, prompting Athena to beam as she rose and tugged me along.
"Follow me, the little ones have been longing for you. Play with them while I whip up something tasty."
Dragged by her hand, I glanced back at Ralph and silently signaled.
He acknowledged with a nod as Athena led me firmly inside, where I encountered Aria and Josh, their young faces brightening instantly at my sight.
"Big brother!"
They cried out, dashing toward me for tight hugs. I grinned warmly, tousling their hair before we dove into games, while Athena busied herself in the kitchen. Rest wasn’t truly necessary for me, but unwinding like this brought a soothing calm and joy when circumstances allowed.
So, I embraced the moment, frolicking with the children as they reveled in my company, chasing each other about. Curiously, neither Ralph nor Athena probed how I’d snuck up behind them undetected. They simply embraced my secretive nature, accepting that I’d bypassed all barriers to join them covertly.
In truth, after learning of my exploits against the Imperials, my sudden appearance hardly seemed enigmatic anymore. Amused by the idea, I chuckled inwardly and devoted the following hour to the kids’ games until exhaustion claimed them, and they dozed off on my lap.
A soft, affectionate smile graced my lips as I caressed the heads of the slumbering children. Athena reappeared then, her expression blooming into a broad grin at the tender scene, her gaze softening with warmth as she murmured.
"Come on, dinner’s ready. The kids can eat when they wake."
With those words, she scooped up the little ones effortlessly and carried them to their beds, settling them snugly. Night had fallen by now, hours slipping by since the chaos, as I headed to the dining area. I settled into a chair, with Athena joining me shortly after. The table brimmed with an array of mouthwatering dishes, their aromas utterly inviting.
I savored the scents deeply before inquiring.
"Has Ralph headed out for duties?"
Athena affirmed with a nod, replying.
"Since your bold move, news has exploded everywhere. Shifts in power dynamics and political landscapes are underway. It’s a massive upheaval, so he’s handling it presently. He mentioned you should proceed with your schemes and reach out if assistance is required."
I acknowledged with a nod.
"That works. Are the others aware I’m safe?"
"Yes, Ralph updated them, and relief washed over the group. They echoed the same pledge of support..."
A smile crossed my face as Athena appended.
"They’re also quietly plotting their vengeance."
I laughed lightly at that, then probed.
"Let me guess—they’re disseminating the story rapidly across all corners, all while tarnishing reputations?"
Athena confirmed with a nod. Her satisfaction with the strategy shone through, yet a deeper urge burned in her to inflict greater harm.
"I trust they won’t push too far. Though the war council will be too overwhelmed to counter the smears, toppling them excessively could backfire. Their grip on power remains enormous."
"They’re aware, rest easy."
Athena assured me, and with my nod, I turned my attention to the meal. We soon dug in, sharing a tranquil companionship. Occasionally, Athena posed gentle queries to confirm my well-being, along with casual chats about my daily life, and I answered in kind.
The ambiance felt warm and serene, and part of me yearned to share such moments with my true kin, but this interlude served its purpose. Navigating shadows freely beat constant surveillance. Once I “awaken,” relentless pursuit awaits, demanding I maximize my current freedom.
