"We will simply fall in love, then."
Corey’s mouth twitched the moment he heard Pamela's declaration.
Fall in love?
Just like that, they would fall in love?
Was the process of falling in love really that effortless?
Furthermore, was finding love even remotely close to being one of his priorities?
"Oh, for heaven's sake." He rubbed the bridge of his nose, shaking his head in disbelief.
"What is this talk about falling in love? What are you even saying? What is wrong with you?"
Pamela glanced down just as Primus and Prima glided toward them. The duo settled onto her lap, clutching snacks and drinks while they began to eat.
Their eyes sparkled with excitement as they shifted their attention back and forth between her and Corey.
"Are we getting a little brother?" Primus whispered quietly into Prima’s ear.
Prima shook her head in response. "It might be a little sister."
"But I'd rather have a little brother," Primus pouted, earning a scoff from Prima.
"Of course you would. We will find out if it's a brother or a sister... eventually."
Primus tossed a piece of popcorn into his mouth and began to chew. He spoke even as he munted on the snack.
"Eventually."
Prima followed his lead, nodding her head in agreement.
"Eventually."
Corey shot a glare at the pair. Though a thousand retorts came to mind, he chose to remain silent.
Engaging with them would only serve to increase his irritation.
He turned his focus back to Pamela. "Listen... I’m not sure if you heard me, but I told you we cannot have a child. It is far too perilous and completely unwise to bring a kid into the world right now."
"And you mention falling in love, but the reality is I will likely depart from New Earth. We won't even be together."
Pamela looked at Corey and let out a scoff before returning her attention to Primus and Prima.
A gentle smile touched her lips as she stroked their heads.
"I hear what you are saying. I am fully aware that having a child at this moment is incredibly dangerous, particularly given your past actions and your future plans."
"Then—"
"Do not interrupt me."
Without even looking at him, Prima pointed a finger at Corey. His left eye twitched at the gesture, but he held his tongue.
"Good."
Slowly lowering her hand, she resumed her explanation.
"As I stated, I am aware that you are surrounded by enemies and that your safety is compromised. You are a wanted man, Corey. I know this."
She went silent for a moment, then turned to lock her gaze deep into Corey’s eyes.
"But tell me, Corey. At what point will you ever be without enemies?"
Corey’s eyes widened a fraction as a million thoughts raced through his mind simultaneously.
"I—I—"
He began to stammer, prompting a warm smile from Pamela.
"See? You have no answer."
She tenderly lifted Primus and Prima, bringing them closer to her face while smiling at them.
"For someone like you, safety will likely only exist when you stand at the peak of Cultivation. When your power rivals that of your Ancestor... or perhaps if you hit a wall you cannot overcome, or if you simply choose to abandon the path of Cultivation entirely."
"Those are the only three scenarios where you would be forced to settle down and start a family. And how many years away is that, Corey?"
"We both know you will find a path through any future obstacles in your Cultivation. I also suspect that your drive will not be easily extinguished now that you know of beings like your ancestor."
"You desire to reach their level of power, and if possible, to surpass them. It is written all over your face. It is so clear in your eyes, and even the runes surrounding you pulse with that ambition."
Corey’s expression shifted, and with a snap of her fingers, Pamela used runes to manifest small wooden rocking chairs.
The eyes of Prima and Primus lit up, and they scrambled to sit on the rocking chairs.
Pamela smiled softly at their excitement before shifting her focus back to Corey.
"You will always be hunted by powerful foes, Corey. Even those entities known as the Supremes are already your adversaries. There will be no peace for you until you reach the summit and become untouchable."
"Unless you have firmly decided that children are not an option until you reach the peak, you must face the fact that you could perish at any time without leaving any descendants behind."
Corey looked down, his eyes filled with deep reflection, as Pamela continued.
"I shared your mindset until about a year ago. I realized enemies would always be a constant, but I still desired my own family and children."
"Cultivation is a lonely, selfish, and cruel journey because having loved ones means you can be made to suffer through them."
"But I do not care. If I choose to have children, not even Cultivation can prevent me from finding happiness."
"And should any enemy dare to harm those I love, I will ensure they die in the most horrific way imaginable. It is that simple."
Corey slowly raised his head to look at Pamela. He wanted to argue a million points, but he ultimately just let out a weary sigh.
"You realize that if we keep debating this, we could go on for a full day without reaching a consensus."
Pamela gave him a warm smile. "I'm aware. But at least you aren't flatly refusing me or claiming you never want children."
Corey shook his head, a wry smile forming. "Well... it is a lot to process, and it has certainly given me a new perspective. I've never given much thought to... love, family, or children."
He sighed once more, then looked at Pamela with a hint of curiosity.
"Why are you against using the Survival by Battle method to evolve your race? Wouldn't that be a quicker path for you?"
Pamela’s expression turned somewhat solemn as she shook her head.
"I have relied on that method so frequently that I feel my body has become too accustomed to it... To evolve further that way, I believe I would need to defeat at least a Tier 8 or Tier 9 opponent."
"Or in the worst-case scenario... I would have to face a god at my current Tier and either triumph or survive. There are other factors, but that is why I wish to abandon that method."
"The stakes are simply too high, and I might actually lose my life."
She paused, glancing away.
"You know my race already stands at the pinnacle of the universe. To advance further, I would essentially have to achieve a feat that breaks the laws of the universe... and that is incredibly risky for me. Not everyone is like you, you know."
Corey let out a soft chuckle and gave a casual wave of his hand.
"I understand. We will deal with that when the time comes. For now, let’s concentrate on the priority..."
With a flick of his right hand, his status window materialized before him.
"Severing my connection to the Universal System."
