A grin spread across Chiang Xiao's face.
"He told me the truth."
Meng Xinian shot Zhu Shun a proud glance.
"That's pure destiny, real destiny."
"Meet Chen Yin, my old playmate from the compound days, and here's Wang Yi, Chiang Xiao's close buddy who's also Chen Yin's other half."
"Brother Shun."
With natural familiarity, Chen Yin and Wang Yi both greeted him as "Brother Shun."
"Excellent, such fine gentlemen and lovely ladies all around." Zhu Shun's gaze lingered on Wang Yi for a moment, his eyes flickering faintly, though he soon brightened up, slapping Meng Xinian's arm and urging, "Hurry up, join me in fishing—I've had my sights on that one for two whole days and trapped it in the crack just today."
"Are we actually fishing?"
"Absolutely serious! You don't suppose I'd ditch the plan just to charm the girls now, do you?" Zhu Shun let out a booming laugh before adding, "Come on, let's head out—we'll chat plenty over the fresh catch later!"
Meng Xinian turned to Chiang Xiao. "With this wound, can I get in the water?"
In truth, the injury had formed a scab by now, and though the recent scuffle might have tugged at it excessively, dipping in briefly ought to pose no issue if he avoided prolonged soaking.
Chiang Xiao gave a nod. "Just take care, all the same."
"Understood."
"He sure obeys his wife." Zhu Shun remarked to Chiang Xiao, "Don't fret, sister-in-law—I won't pull any tricks on him underwater."
Chen Yin appeared keen to join in as well.
"Little Yi, mind if I jump in too?"
"Go ahead; I never said otherwise." Wang Yi sounded somewhat unused to him seeking her input.
"No spare outfits here, so you ladies head off somewhere else and return at our call—we've got to strip down to swim." Meng Xinian explained.
Chiang Xiao let out a light scoff, tugging Wang Yi's hand. "Let's wander and explore a bit."
Into the nearby woods they ventured, conversing lightly along the way, sensing the perfect conditions outdoors. It lacked full warmth yet shed the sharp chill, breezes gentle and air crisp, leaving them utterly at ease.
"Hey? Mushrooms there?" Wang Yi abruptly gestured toward the foliage under a nearby tree.
Chiang Xiao peered across and spotted bunches of crimson mushrooms sprouting amid the lush greenery, their scarlet hue popping strikingly and attractively.
"They are," Chiang Xiao brightened instantly, striding forward with haste. "Wang Yi, come pick some—roasted ones are delicious!"
"Won't they be toxic though? I've heard loads of mushrooms carry poison that can kill if eaten. No clue how to spot the edible from the dangerous."
"I do!" Chiang Xiao laughed softly. "Back in the day, I was quite the mushroom hunter! Haven't foraged any in ages—got a bit of nostalgia for it now."
"Fine, looks like plenty more that way!"
Wang Yi scanned about and noticed several more scattered nearby.
"Big haul incoming! Though how'll we carry them?"
Chiang Xiao rose, glanced around, and noticed a wild yam-like plant bearing broad leaves.
A handful of leaves she gathered, along with lengthy grass strands, which she twisted and wove briefly into a pair of basic leaf carriers.
By layering two leaves per one, each could contain roughly two pounds worth of mushrooms.
"Take one each."
Wang Yi eyed the "carriers" and burst into chuckles. "Xiao Chiang, you're so clever—how'd you whip these up?"
"No big deal; as a child, I frequented the hills, wrapping foraged fruits and the like in leaves back then."
