Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s Chapter 2426 - 2362: Seems to Be Injured

Chiang Xiao shrugged off the inevitability of trouble finding her while chatting with Ding Haijing, who wanted to speak with Officer Meng upon his return. To her surprise, Meng Xinian burst in unexpectedly early from the Enclosed Camp, his unwashed training clothes carrying a faint sour scent from days of intense drills. Their reunion sparked playful teasing as she wrinkled her nose at the smell and offered to wash his clothes, only for him to refuse, insisting her hands were too delicate for such work, while Ding Haijing and the others stood by awkwardly ignored.

Why on earth would Meng Xi overlook them?

Naturally, the moment he got back, his gaze fixed straight on Chiang Xiao. Why bother noticing those burly guys?

Only after Ding Haijing cleared his throat a couple of times did Meng Xi finally lift his head and cast a quick look their way.

"Officer Meng."

Both Luo Yongsheng and Guan Tiezhu called out to him at the same time, while Ding Haijing's stare burned with challenge, "Officer Meng, how about a spar?"

"No thanks, you're no match for me." Meng Xi responded coolly, without holding back.

He'd known for ages that Ding Haijing had clashed with Wei Yixi multiple times but never come out on top.

These days, on solid ground, not even Wei Yixi could hold his own against him, much less Ding Haijing.

"You won't know unless we give it a shot."

"It's plain to see."

Meng Xi shot back, "Hold up, I'll grab a quick shower and switch outfits first, then we can chat. Little, come in and grab some clothes for me."

With sincere intent, he tugged Chiang Xiao indoors, slamming the door behind them with a swift flick, before drawing her near right away.

Even if she claimed otherwise, Chiang Xiao wrapped her arms around his waist anyway.

Yet Meng Xi fretted that the odor clinging to his garments might truly annoy her.

Once he let go, his eyes sparkled as he remarked, "Have you gotten taller?"

Chiang Xiao froze for a second, then met his gaze; sure enough, she realized she no longer needed to crane her neck quite as far to look up at him.

"I didn't realize it, but perhaps I've reached this stature lately."

It was possible she wouldn't sprout any more.

"Not for sure, you could keep growing right up to twenty." Meng Xi extended a hand to tousle her locks, "Anything pressing you need to share? If not, hold off till I'm clean, and we'll discuss it."

"Nothing like that."

"I have something." Meng Xi stared at her deeply, "I missed you."

Chiang Xiao: "...."

Wasn't that overly sappy?

Meng Xi, though, saw nothing corny about it.

Despite over five years of acquaintance, did it truly matter when she was merely a child back then?

Any deeper thoughts had once made him feel downright predatory.

This was the real deal, actual emotions blooming for her.

Moreover, their yearly time together had always been limited. In the past, even scarcer. Only recently, in the last year, had they crossed paths more often.

He believed he'd never get enough of Chiang Xiao.

"I'm off to shower."

Meng Xi let out a soft laugh, spotting the faint flush creeping over her face.

Proof that, cheesy or not, her cheeks always turned pink whenever he sincerely confessed missing her.

Chiang Xiao pulled out fresh attire for him, observed as he headed into the bath, gave her cheeks a light tap, and returned to the living area.

Ding Haijing eyed her curiously.

"I never figured Officer Meng would act so affectionate toward his fiancée. Word is he's pretty aloof, almost like a walking corpse."

Chiang Xiao: "..."

From the start of knowing Meng Xi, she'd never viewed him as having a zombie expression; to her, he came off more as a domineering type.

Apparently, the former Meng Xi had left quite the misleading mark on folks.

"That said, Officer Meng appears to be hurt."

Guan Tiezhu piped up out of nowhere.

Chiang Xiao jolted in surprise, hurt?

How had that escaped her notice?

"You probably missed it, right when you flung yourself at him..." Guan Tiezhu seemed a tad shy mentioning it, yet pressed on, "You likely pressed against his chest, and I caught him wince just a bit."

Back then, with Chiang Xiao buried in his embrace, she couldn't catch his expression, so of course, the subtle reaction slipped by her.
