‘Divine, you bastard, I’ll pay you back for everything you've done.’ Vritra swore internally, certain that the entity had acted with full intent.
Rising to his feet, Vritra hurried over to Teresa. The sound of her sobbing filled him with immense guilt, even though the whole situation was merely a misunderstanding.
He pulled her into a warm embrace and began to stroke her back with a gentle touch while Teresa hid her face against his chest.
“I'm sorry, I wasn't yelling at you. I was… having a conversation with someone else, and he just made me lose my temper. I would never raise my voice at you,” Vritra whispered softly.
Because she was prepared to abandon everything just to be with him, the last thing he wanted was for her to shed a single tear or feel any sorrow.
“I- I was SOB the only one here, SOB there is n- no one else…” Teresa managed to say between her sobs, her small fists tightly gripping his clothes.
Her cheeks puffed out in distress.
“It’s a telepathic ability of mine, so please stop crying; seeing you like this makes me sad too.” Vritra continued to comfort her for several moments.
It took a few minutes before her breathing finally steadied and she calmed down.
The two remained in each other's arms, with Teresa’s hands locked around him and her face buried deep against the crook of his neck.
While still stroking her hair, Vritra asked, “But why would you ever think that I hate you?”
“I know you were trying to get out of our wedding before; you didn't want this marriage. I’m much older than you, I’m blind, I can’t bear children, and my family demanded so many conditions…” Teresa murmured.
In her mind, his hatred seemed perfectly justified.
Vritra let out a small chuckle and tightened his hold on her. “You silly girl, I could never hate you. Regarding the marriage, there are things you don’t understand yet. I’ll explain everything to you very soon.”
Realizing she had already been through a lot, he decided it was best to reveal the truth to her gradually.
A brief silence fell between them before a thought occurred to Vritra. “You mentioned that I didn’t want to marry you, but you’re saying it as if you’ve wanted this marriage for a long time.”
“Yes, I did,” Teresa confessed in a low voice.
“Hmm, but we hadn't even met. So, if it had been any other man, would you still have wanted to marry him?” Vritra decided to tease her to break the tension, purposefully making his voice sound a bit hurt.
He found the situation curious; perhaps she possessed some knowledge he didn't.
“Huh? No, I wouldn't!” Teresa pulled back sharply to protest, her lovely face inches from his own.
“So, you knew I was the groom? I’ve been gone for a long time, so how could you have known anything?” Vritra questioned, though he had his suspicions.
“Uhm… let’s talk about that once we’ve left this place,” Teresa suggested.
“Alright, Tess, we’ll do that. Anyway, what was it you were showing me earlier?” he asked, relieved that he had identified her insecurities so early on.
“Oh, these rings! Do you like them?” Tess finally recalled. She retrieved the rings from the ground and presented them to him.
“Wow, they’re just as beautiful as my Tess. I love them,” Vritra said. He picked up one of the bands, took her hand, and slid the ring onto her finger with care.
“Now, it’s your turn to help me,” Vritra said, resting his hand atop hers.
Even though her heightened senses allowed her to perceive the world to an extent, Vritra desired for her to see everything clearly. He knew he had to find a cure for her sight soon.
The pair both wore the silver rings now. As they held hands, the rings looked perfect together.
They conversed a while longer, the bond between them growing stronger by the minute.
“Are you all set?” Vritra inquired as Teresa finished putting on a veil and garments that masked her entire body.
He thought she looked adorable in the oversized, loose clothing.
“Yes!” Tess replied with excitement, eager to begin her new life.
Taking her by the hand, the two exited the room. She wore a glove on one hand, while the other remained bare to hold onto him.
Gunter and the rest of the group were already waiting outside, engaged in conversation with Shen and the others.
“You’ve arrived.” Ava turned to look at her son and daughter-in-law, though she couldn't see Tess clearly through the heavy layers.
“Yes, let’s head out.” Vritra gave a nod as they walked out of the Ford palace. A line of vehicles waited for their departure.
The Fords were sending them off with an abundance of gifts. One particular vehicle was exceptionally lavish and decorated, intended by the Yates family to transport Vritra and his new bride.
Sakshi was present as well, her neck wrapped in bandages. She was unable to speak for the time being.
The Fords, however, were shocked to see Teresa out in the open air. Sir Giant stepped forward, his voice booming: “Teresa, what are you doing out here? This is far too dangerous! Go back to your room immediately!”
“She’s out here because she is coming with me, obviously,” Vritra stated. He had already cast multiple layers of protective barriers around her so that no one could get near.
Even his other wives would be unable to touch her by accident.
“That’s impossible! It’s far too risky. She must remain within the Ford realm. If you wish, you are welcome to stay here with her.
But we cannot permit her to leave for her own safety. Do you have any idea how perilous it is for her to just walk around like this? A mere touch from an insect could put her life at risk!”
Sir Giant remained stubborn, insisting that Teresa stay confined to her quarters.
“Don’t worry. Even the very air she breathes will pass through a security check. She will be far safer by my side than she ever was in this realm,” Vritra countered.
“Art, you have to understand, her safety is the priority. Can’t you just settle here?” Shen added, standing behind Sir Giant.
“No. Let’s just let her decide if she wants to stay here or come with me,” Vritra said, as all eyes turned toward Teresa.
“Fine, let’s do tha—” Sir Giant began with confidence, but then he faltered. He wondered what kind of spell the boy had cast to make Teresa so submissive to him.
“I will g—” Teresa started to answer, but Sir Giant cut her off.
“Regardless of her choice, her safety comes first. We can’t take chances. I’m sure we can reach a compromise if we discuss this calmly. Perhaps you could live here, or visit her frequently?” he proposed.
Rich remained silent, offering no opinion. Sakshi also stayed quiet since she was physically unable to talk.
Had she been able to, she would have also demanded Teresa stay. She had no desire to lose such a talented slave.
Gunter stepped forward to intervene. “Sir Giant, we recognize your concerns, but we will do everything in our power to keep her safe. You have no need to worry. I look upon her as my own daughter now.”
“No, no, no. You don’t understand the situation, and you won’t be able to shield her from external threats, especially now that her identity is public knowledge. So just—” Sir Giant was interrupted by the sudden appearance of black smoke rising nearby.
The sight immediately drew their attention, and the group fell silent, watching the phenomenon.
Moments later, a figure emerged from the haze, dressed in black and wearing a striking golden mask.
“I am Smog, one of the seats of the Golden Moon. I have come to take Teresa Ford to our organization,” the man declared, his eyes locked onto Teresa.
