"I see…" Vritra murmured, nodding as the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. However, the visions were far from over.
Darius and Teresa had entered the world as twins, but she had unintentionally absorbed the tragic fate meant for her sibling.
This was the true reason for her blindness; it was a curse intended for Darius that she had taken upon herself.
'No wonder everyone treats her as if she’s made of glass, fearing a single touch might shatter her.'
"Teresa, my sister, possesses the most selfless heart. She would gladly endure any agony or hardship herself rather than witness others suffer," Divine’s voice echoed once more, heavy with affection and sorrow.
Vritra shifted his attention back to the flickering images, focusing on the second sister—the one who had nearly forced a god into a permanent slumber after wounding him severely.
Her spirit and physical form had been torn asunder, and the subsequent revelation left Vritra utterly stunned.
Both her soul and her body had manifested into two legendary mythic halos. One became the demonic Veyll mythic halo, renowned as a force of pure annihilation.
The other transformed into the Nihil Anima mythic halo, which held the terrifying power to resurrect the spirits of the deceased as soul wraiths.
"W-What?" Vritra stammered, lost for words. He wondered if the conflict between these two mythic halos was a simple test of strength or if a deeper conspiracy was at play.
Yasmine had previously mentioned that the Nihil Anima had been drained of its power during a brutal war against the demonic Veyll, a conflict where a demon god had also intervened.
The sheer amount of information was overwhelming. Vritra couldn't help but ask: "If Teresa is your first sister, what happened to the second? Was she also granted a reincarnation?"
"That is irrelevant for the moment. I need your answer. You intend to marry her, don't you?" Divine questioned, his voice thick with emotion. Before Vritra could respond, he continued:
"You should know, I acted as a guardian for your wife, Fiona, while you were absent.
Do you honestly believe that with her level of Cultivation at the time, she could have conquered the 4th mythic halo, the undead, without assistance?"
Vritra fell silent, contemplating the claim. He had secretly suspected that Fiona’s success in claiming that mythic halo couldn't have been attributed to mere fortune alone.
It appeared Divine had indeed played a hand in it.
After weighing the history and the circumstances, Vritra reached a conclusion.
"I am not asking for the world; I am only asking you to marry her. Surely you can manage that?" Divine pressed, his tone pleading.
"...Sigh. I hear you, but my answer remains no," Vritra replied, refusing to be swayed by the emotional manipulation.
"Tch. Very well. If you agree to the marriage, I will reveal Yennefer's current location," Divine said, laying his final card on the table.
"Hmm. Fine. But what happens if the marriage is dissolved by someone else?" Vritra countered.
"As long as you aren't the one who initiates the split, I will fulfill my end of the bargain," Divine promised, rolling his eyes in exasperation.
Vritra gave a sharp nod, and the flow of time finally resumed its normal pace.
The clone standing amidst the Fords recoiled in shock while Shen remained paralyzed. Vritra’s arm was extended, his hand firmly gripping the blade of the knife.
"An assassination attempt?" Sir Giant was the first to snap into action. His body hummed with power, and he vanished in a flash along with the clone.
"A-Ah, so you were stopping the blade?" Shen said awkwardly, withdrawing his hand. He had nearly shattered the arm of his future brother-in-law in the confusion.
Throughout the chaos, Teresa remained perfectly still, a silent statue.
"Huh?" Vritra’s face darkened as he turned his gaze toward Shen.
"You... you were actually trying to break my arm? Is this the extent of the respect you have for me? If your hatred runs this deep, why don't you just call off this wedding?" he demanded, feigning a look of deep betrayal.
"N-No, you've got it all wrong! It was a mistake..." Shen stammered, unable to find an excuse. The entire assembly had witnessed him nearly strike Vritra.
"Shen, how dare you!" Gunter roared, standing up and barely restraining himself from striking the man down.
"Let us proceed with the ceremony. I will see to it that this criminal is punished personally—"
SLAP
"Hmph. You think an apology fixes this? Do you have any idea how terrified I was?" Vritra barked, delivering a stinging slap to Shen’s cheek, followed immediately by another.
SLAP
'Heh, I’m slapping the monarch in front of his entire court. There’s no way he’ll let me marry his sister now,' Vritra thought to himself.
A major reason for his resistance was his desire to stand on equal ground with Divine and extract more secrets from him.
He wondered how the gods would react if they discovered Teresa was actually Divine’s sister.
The guests were reeling from the rapid-fire scandals. First an attempt on the bride, then an assault on the groom, and now this public humiliation.
"Yes... it was my blunder. Please, forgive me..." Shen muttered, bowing his head. Since Vritra was becoming family, he chose to endure the slaps without retaliation.
"Yo—" Vritra started, intending to continue the beating, but the sky suddenly shifted in hue.
A thick shroud of darkness blanketed the area as hundreds of spatial portals began tearing open in the firmament.
"Damnit, not at this moment," Sir Giant and Shen cursed simultaneously.
"P-Priest! Speed up the rites! Finish the ceremony now!" Shen bellowed as Sir Giant soared into the air to buy them some time.
'What impeccable timing,' Vritra thought, suppressing a laugh. He had been looking for a way to settle his grievances with this family anyway.
As Shen prepared to take flight, Vritra suddenly grabbed a handful of his hair and yanked his head back.
"Where do you think you're going? You think you can lay a hand on me and then just fly away? Your family's etiquette is truly something else."
Vritra recited the lines like a character from a melodrama. He found himself wishing Shitless was there to witness the performance.
'What? Since when did he become this strong?' Shen was genuinely startled, but he managed to speak:
"I will offer a formal apology later. This is an emergency; please, let me handle this threat first."
"Fine, go then. I'm not as petty as you," Vritra said, releasing his grip. Shen hurriedly smoothed his hair with his fingers before launching himself into the sky.
The crowd was divided between those who were utterly confused and those who were thoroughly entertained by the spectacle.
While the two experts tried to close the rifts, Vritra secretly used his power to accelerate the portal formation.
"Now, exchange your cups and drink," the priest urged with frantic haste.
Teresa placed her glass onto the hovering tray with a gentle motion. Vritra looked at her, wondering about her internal state.
Was she genuinely happy about this union? Or was she, like him, merely a pawn of circumstance?
'Sigh, it seems I can't escape this marriage...' Vritra realized the inevitable was happening. But if he was going to be wed, he decided it shouldn't be a dull affair.
There should be conflict and the scent of blood. A marriage of this magnitude required excitement.
Vritra set his glass on the tray as well. The vessels swapped places, coming to a halt in front of their new owners.
They lifted the glasses as the priest pleaded with them to consume the wine.
Under Vritra's hidden influence, the portals opened fully, and in an instant, a flood of figures poured through.
Thousands of warriors now occupied the sky. Vritra observed the newcomers—a race he had never encountered before.
They were the Sea Race.
Though they possessed human-like frames, their skin was covered in shimmering scales, and their facial features were distinctly piscine.
"CEASE! This wedding is over. We have come to claim the bride!" a man adorned in extravagant jewelry shouted as he stepped forward.
He was the king of his tribe, and he was determined to seize Teresa by any means necessary.
