“It would actually be strange if he didn't act this way,” Ning Shu remarked as she nudged Mei Ziqing forward.
Scanning the area, Lar noticed Dagger Mu was nowhere to be seen. Ning Shu suggested, “Why don’t you go try to find him?”
Lar shook his head in refusal. “There is no need. He’s likely lurking close by. Let me push.” He reached out to take the handles of the cart from Ning Shu.
Ning Shu extended her spiritual consciousness, scanning the immediate environment.
As expected, she detected Dagger Mu trailing them stealthily. With a blade in his grip, he was venting his fury by hacking at the surrounding trees and shrubbery.
His expression was draped in shadow.
Such was the nature of a darkened weapon. Their souls were consumed by malice and resentment, completely isolated and obsessed only with their own perspective.
In many ways, Dagger Mu resembled Mei Ziqing’s former lover—obsessive, paranoid, and grim.
Under these circumstances, only someone like Lar would believe he could still be of any use.
Ning Shu felt certain that the entruster, Nicole, would never be able to maintain control over Dagger Mu.
Ning Shu remained silent, pressing her lips into a thin line.
It appeared she would have to settle things with Dagger Mu properly before her departure.
As Lar pushed the cart, his eyes kept darting around, clearly searching for any sign of Dagger Mu.
Ning Shu: …
A sense of foreboding suddenly washed over her.
If some sort of entanglement developed between Lar and Dagger Mu, how would she ever explain it to Nicole?
She felt like dropping to her knees and pounding the earth in frustration!
Given Dagger Mu’s terrifying fixation on the idea of “you are the only one in my world,” there was no telling what horrors he might commit.
The more Ning Shu pondered the situation, the more distorted her expression became. She stared at Lar with a blank, deadpan look.
Confused, Lar asked, “Is something the matter?”
Mei Ziqing spoke up bluntly, “She’s worried you’ll end up falling for that fallen weapon.”
Ning Shu snapped, “Scram…”
With a sudden movement, Ning Shu flipped the cart over. Mei Ziqing tumbled to the dirt, stood herself up, and began brushing the dust from her clothes.
“You’ve clearly recovered. Why are you still acting like an invalid?” Ning Shu asked crossly.
“I haven't reached full health yet; I’ve only just regained the ability to walk,” Mei Ziqing countered.
Lar remained standing there like a statue, evidently paralyzed by Mei Ziqing’s suggestion, unable to process it for a long moment.
“Mei Ziqing, if I don’t beat you to death today, I’ll adopt your surname,” Ning Shu threatened, pointing a finger at her. If Lar actually developed some bizarre, unspeakable feelings because of those words, it would be an absolute catastrophe.
Lar looked as though he might crumble into dust from embarrassment. He hurriedly turned to Ning Shu, saying, “The person I… I like… is Nicole.”
Lar’s voice trailed off into a stammer, his shyness reaching extreme levels.
Ning Shu shot a glare at Mei Ziqing. “We really shouldn't spend time together anymore.”
Good grief, Mei Ziqing was wounded, so now she was trying to take her frustrations out on the entire world. If she uttered one more word, Ning Shu felt ready to tear her mouth apart.
Mei Ziqing let out a laugh. “I was merely joking. I even claimed I liked you once. That’s clearly impossible, right?”
Ning Shu: “Get lost, scram…”
Since Mei Ziqing’s health had improved and Ning Shu had wrecked the cart by flipping it, she had no choice but to travel on foot.
While her mental state was far better than before, she kept pestering Ning Shu to carry her as they walked. Ning Shu’s only response was: scram.
Ning Shu’s own back was still injured, yet Mei Ziqing expected a piggyback ride. The woman was completely devoid of empathy.
Mei Ziqing then compromised, saying that if a piggyback was out of the question, she would settle for a princess carry.
Get lost!
She actually wanted to be carried like a princess? To hell with that!
Being tossed over a shoulder like a sack of grain was the only thing Ning Shu might consider.
Constantly demanding to be carried or held—what on earth was wrong with her?!
