Ning Shu and Mei Ziqing discussed the nature of hardship and equivalent exchange after Mei Ziqing commented on Ning Shu's situation. Mei Ziqing then coughed up blood, prompting Ning Shu to insist she survive to avoid suspicion from her father. With their carriage gone, Lar carried the ailing Mei Ziqing as they began their journey back, observing the desolate, desertifying landscape. Mei Ziqing used her water ordinance to bring a small amount of rain.

“The absolute lowest rank, sigh…” Mei Ziqing uttered, her voice heavy with dejection.

Ning Shu shifted her gaze toward the drifting clouds above. If she could truly master the water ordinance, she would never have to worry about a lack of drinking water again.

At the very least, it would save her a significant amount of points.

As they entered the town, they found the streets carpeted in fallen leaves. The wind whipped through, swirling the debris into the air.

The entire place felt utterly desolate.

Surveying the bleak surroundings, Mei Ziqing sighed. “Sometimes I feel like I brought this misery on myself. All that hard work was for nothing.”

Ning Shu: …

And so it begins again.

The past should remain in the past.

Lar helped Mei Ziqing down and then departed with Dagger Mu to search for something to eat.

While Ning Shu and Mei Ziqing sat together by the side of the road, Ning Shu asked, “You never mentioned having a lover before?”

“He had already started avoiding me before I even met you.” Mei Ziqing leaned her head against her hand.

Ning Shu attempted to lean back with her hands behind her head as a pillow, but she accidentally brushed the wound on her back. She sat up instantly, her face twisting in pain. “I actually believe your life has been refined; you have experienced a rebirth. You will only grow stronger from now on.”

Having survived this, Mei Ziqing had overcome another major hurdle in her life. Every situation has its pros and cons. The true catastrophe is getting trapped within it and never finding a way out.

It appeared that Mei Ziqing had finally moved on. “You were truly good to him. To prevent his elimination, you even went so far as to kneel and beg. You did your absolute best and gave him everything you had,” Ning Shu remarked.

Mei Ziqing spread her hands helplessly. “You witnessed it yourself. He didn’t seem to value it. He always believed I was the obstacle preventing him from reaching his glorious future. But remaining alive is more vital than anything else.”

“Even if he had successfully finished the merging process, those in power would still have found countless ways to handle him.

“Without genuine strength, how could he possibly intimidate the massive number of task-takers who have lived for untold ages?”

Ning Shu let out a soft “oh.” The waters of this organization were far too deep; she was no match for their schemes.

Lar returned, pushing a cart. Since there was no carriage available, this cart was their only option.

He spread two soft quilts inside the cart to cushion the ride against the bumps.

“It has been a while since you last ate. Can you still hold out?” Ning Shu asked Lar.

“I am fine.” Lar offered Ning Shu a smile.

“Then I will do the pushing.” Ning Shu began to push the cart without any visible effort.

Dagger Mu hopped onto the cart. “My legs are tired from walking. I am going to take a rest.”

“Get off.” Ning Shu’s expression turned cold.

Dagger Mu simply burrowed into the quilts, clinging tightly to Mei Ziqing. “I won’t.”

Since it wasn't her being hugged, Ning Shu didn't let it bother her. She simply continued pushing the cart out of the town limits.

They traveled for half a day, yet the landscape remained barren.

Had they still not escaped the range of the formation?

This formation was incredibly powerful. It was a shame it had been destroyed; otherwise, she might have liked to study it. Perhaps it had uses other than just altering the heavens.

Whoever had the skill to design and invent such a formation was a genuine talent.

As she pushed the cart, Ning Shu questioned Mei Ziqing, “That heavens-altering formation—how did your late husband obtain it?”

Mei Ziqing: …

Late husband?!

“Hey, don’t go coughing up blood.” Ning Shu used a cloth to wipe Mei Ziqing’s mouth.

Mei Ziqing replied, “I have no idea where he got it from either.”

Because they couldn't locate any moon beasts, Lar eventually ran out of energy. Driven by hunger, he reverted to his original form as a crossbow.

Ning Shu felt quite guilty about it.

Dagger Mu grabbed Lar from Ning Shu’s hands and held him close. “I will be the one to carry him.”
