With a precise sweep of her legs, Seras flung him away from her thighs, her action elegant but forceful, hurling Damon rearward straight into a tree.
A solid crash echoed as his back hit the trunk hard, cracking the bark and dislodging leaves from the force.
She drew in a steady breath, her chest expanding gradually while eyeing the shattered root clusters littering the soil, all torn apart in numerous spots. The crimson sap inside them, much like blood, soaked into the earth and smeared over her boots and garments.
Damon got to his feet, letting out a breath of relief, and rubbed the nape of his neck as small pieces of bark tumbled from his shoulders.
"Man, that was close. You really came through in a clutch... I knew my master plan to lure them away from everyone would succeed..."
He declared it loud enough for the whole group to catch, smoothing out his coat and wiping away the dirt, though in truth he hadn't plotted anything like that. It was simply a stroke of good fortune.
Seras fixed him with a sharp stare.
Meanwhile, the expedition members gazed at him in stunned admiration, their previous terror now swapped for respect.
"Incredible, so that was his strategy."
"I heard Damon Grey is a tactical mastermind too."
"No wonder he's the grandson of the Golden Sun."
"He's incredibly brave, risking his life for us—what a noble soul..."
Renata shut her eyes in defeat.
If they believed that was his intention, they couldn't be more mistaken.
He'd only been focused on his own survival.
Still, she had to admit she was amazed. Damon truly excelled at spinning tales. Just see how fast he crafted a story and let the others build upon it.
Seras scanned the expedition team, then glanced at the dark roots still tangled around her ankles. She raised one foot and pulled it loose with a strong tug, the sap stretching taut before breaking.
"Let's move now..." she commanded, as the weary group pressed onward.
The woods had unleashed its full fury in this spot against them, and Seras had crushed it all.
While advancing, Damon abruptly sensed they'd passed some unseen barrier, as if piercing a subtle veil in the atmosphere. He halted for a brief moment, surveying the area intently, yet nothing seemed off. Seras kept marching forward without pause, so he chalked it up to his own nerves.
She was the perfect ally to stick with.
Damon stole another look at her sturdy thighs and couldn't suppress a subtle grin.
"I sense you objectifying me... stop or face death..." Seras warned without turning, slicing through a bush with a smooth sideward cut that highlighted the heavy thickness of the surrounding woods.
Damon clutched his chest in feigned shock.
"What rubbish? I wasn't objectifying you... I merely thought you appeared attractive from the rear..." he chuckled, utterly unbothered by her still-drawn sword.
"I've slain men for far less..." Seras replied, a hint of annoyance creeping into her voice.
"That explains your single status... no one dares to get close..." Damon's grin widened as he caught up to walk beside her, hands folded leisurely behind him.
Seras balled her fist hard, her knuckles paling, before easing it open with a sigh.
"That's not accurate..." she whispered to herself.
Damon rolled his eyes with flair.
"Keep lying to yourself. If I perish here, there won't be any guy left who'd objectify you... if anything, you ought to feel flattered and grateful for me admiring your backside... I might just be the last man interested in you..."
Seras halted abruptly in her stride and gradually unsheathed her tachi.
A soft metallic hiss rang out as the blade emerged, reverberating amid the trees.
Damon felt a chill crawl up his scalp from her response.
Then she grinned.
"Fine then... I confess... so be it... if that's how it is, why not look after me starting now... I dislike indecisive men; I prefer one who meets my gaze... so from this point, I'll rely on you..."
Damon went rigid, his expression twisting in bewilderment as he blinked a couple of times.
"Hold on, hold on—something's off... what do you mean by that...?"
Seras offered a faint smile, her gaze sharpening slightly.
"It means I accept your official proposal to me, naturally. If you're just an indecisive type toying with my emotions, I'll end you to preserve my honor..."
She edged nearer, the sharp tip of her tachi grazing his armor lightly by the collarbone.
"You're not, right...?"
Damon shut his eyes for a second, then reopened them. He scanned her from head to toe deliberately and pondered.
'If I refuse, there's a risk of serious harm or worse; if I agree, I'll be entangled with a woman my mother's age...'
He extended his arm awkwardly for a clasp.
"Seems like a beneficial deal for both... I'll look after you..."
She furrowed her brow at his phrasing, then let out a soft laugh. It appeared a fine distraction, so she didn't object—especially with no other options in sight.
"Very well, look after me..." Seras stated deliberately, her tone icy and devoid of warmth.
Damon pressed his hand to his chest once more.
"Actually, you should look after me instead..."
Before he could add more, a noise caught his ear.
"Actually, you should look after me instead."
Something echoed it from the branches.
Damon started to lift his gaze when Seras' grip seized the back of his head and shoved it downward.
"Don’t look..." she whispered lowly.
"Don’t look... ahahahhah..." something cackled from the trees.
"Keep your heads low... now..." Seras yelled to the expedition team.
Not all were so fortunate.
One person gradually lifted their head.
It was a youth bearing a scar on his neck. Being in the third class, he wasn't truly youthful, yet he appeared so regardless.
His brown eyes bulged as though spotting something in the branches from where the voice originated.
His pupils shifted to white.
