Yang Wei remained silent. Witnessing Hai Li begin his excavation, she promptly trailed after him, setting down her basket to join the search for clams.
“What are you doing here?” Even young Hai Xiaoyao could instinctively feel that something was amiss.
“Don't you people rarely come out to the sea?” Pausing her work, Hai Ling’er directed a suspicious frown toward the couple.
“It's just a coincidence, purely a coincidence, hehe.” Hai Li let out a dry chuckle and rubbed his nose, though his hands never stopped digging.
“How frustrating!” Hai Xiaoyao shouted, his anger causing him to lose all interest in the activity.
Ignoring the outburst, Hai Li and Yang Wei continued their work right beside them as if they hadn't heard a word.
“Ye Feng, should we find a different spot?” It was clear that Zhuang Xiaoqiao despised the couple. She abandoned her digging and turned her gaze toward Ye Feng.
After pretending to weigh the options for a moment, Ye Feng gave a nod. “Fine. Besides, razor clams aren't exactly the most precious seafood out there. It’s no big loss if we leave them.”
“We'll head elsewhere to find something of higher value.”
With those words, he straightened up and began to walk away.
Zhuang Xiaoqiao and Hai Xiaoyao trailed behind him immediately.
Hai Ling’er, however, seemed hesitant to leave. She cast a lingering look at the shore and then at the couple before finally following Ye Feng and the others.
“Hehe, you’re incredibly clever, wife. To think of such a move.” Once Ye Feng’s group was out of earshot, Hai Li turned to Yang Wei with a look of pure joy.
“Just as expected, we found a treasure trove just by following them.”
“What’s more, the moment we showed up, they were so unwilling to be near us that they just handed over this prime spot.”
Watching the departing figures of Ye Feng and Zhuang Xiaoqiao, Yang Wei spoke with a sneer, “Those city folk are too soft; they have no idea how valuable a beach full of razor clams actually is.”
“Searching for something more expensive than razor clams? What a joke.”
“If it were that simple to just pick up high-end seafood from the shore, every villager here would be a millionaire by now!”
“Exactly, exactly.” Hai Li joined in with a sinister laugh. “Now that they’ve cleared out, this entire stretch belongs to us.”
“That clam the city guy pulled out wasn't just any clam. It was likely a razor clam king, worth at least 150 yuan per catty. If we can harvest dozens of catties today, we're going to be rich!”
“Hurry up and dig, honey, before they change their minds and come back!”
With that, Hai Li resumed his frantic digging.
Yang Wei nodded in agreement, putting all her effort back into the sand.
…
Meanwhile, though Hai Ling’er had followed Ye Feng, her dissatisfaction was obvious.
She was no longer the energetic girl she had been moments ago, walking silently beside Ye Feng and Zhuang Xiaoqiao.
Noticing her mood, Ye Feng glanced at her and asked with a light smile, “Are you still upset that we abandoned that treasure land?”
Biting her lip, Hai Ling’er replied with a hint of resentment, “Being able to dig up razor clam kings there was actually a great opportunity.”
“That couple showed up after us. By all rights, they should have been the ones to leave.”
Ye Feng only smiled at her words, offering no immediate defense.
His reaction puzzled Hai Ling’er. “Brother Ye Feng, why are you laughing?”
“Did I say something incorrect?”
Ye Feng shook his head, still smiling. “You’re right. But what if I told you that I did this on purpose?”
“Huh?” Stunned, Hai Ling’er came to a complete stop. “Brother Ye Feng, you did this on purpose?!”
“But why?” Hai Xiaoyao asked, scratching his head in total confusion.
Only Zhuang Xiaoqiao seemed to catch on, looking at Ye Feng with curiosity. “Is there a hidden catch?”
Ye Feng reached out and gently patted Zhuang Xiaoqiao’s head. “Xiaoqiao knows me best.”
“The truth is, aside from the razor clam king I already pulled out, there are only two or three left on that entire beach.”
“Even if Hai Li and Yang Wei dig until their shovels catch fire today, they aren't going to find anything of value.”
“I was setting a trap for them!”
