Day after day, Levi engaged in the silent practice of his breathing method.
Aside from the time spent eating and sleeping, every waking moment was dedicated to his Cultivation.
The servants in the castle rarely caught a glimpse of him. On the few occasions he did appear, he was either contorting his limbs into bizarre positions or clad in heavy armor, shield in hand, as he relentlessly defended against the strikes of Knight Fred.
"I feel so ashamed—our Young Master is so junior, yet he exerts such incredible effort to push his limits."
"What? Is he still training? I should work even harder so the Young Master might grant me an extra ration of food tomorrow morning."
However, no matter how much they toiled, they could not capture his gaze. Levi was simply too focused on his tireless work.
Knight Fred was immensely pleased by these displays of dedication. To ensure his master remained undisturbed, he took it upon himself to manage all the castle's trivial affairs.
Nevertheless, certain conflicts still required Levi to act as a fair judge. Having been a lawyer in his previous life, this skill was the sole remaining trace of his former existence.
Before long, the Coldest Winter Month arrived in December.
This meant the freezing winds would only intensify, accompanied by increasingly violent snowstorms.
The dilapidated wooden shacks of many serfs had long fallen into ruin; they were completely obliterated by the howling wind and heavy snow.
Levi commanded Knight Fred to bring these serfs into the castle's shelter and provide them with work. The women were appointed as maids to serve Levi and manage the household's daily needs.
The men were drafted into the military, causing the number of soldiers under his command to reach an all-time high.
There were now fifty men.
Under Knight Fred's leadership, they were taught fundamental combat techniques. When they weren't training, they were tasked with repairing the castle, performing heavy labor, grazing livestock, and farming.
The children and the elderly carried out smaller chores. In exchange, everyone received their portion of food: a piece of bread and a bowl of red bean soup.
Though the bread was hard and stale, it was delicious to them regardless.
Even Levi and Knight Fred were unable to enjoy high-quality bread due to the poor productivity of Blackwater Valley. This was exacerbated by the fact that, as knights, they required far more sustenance than the average person to maintain their strength.
Levi’s daily food consumption had surged to five or eight times that of a normal man, while Knight Fred needed triple the usual amount.
While the serfs felt deep gratitude for Levi's kindness, he was far too occupied with his breathing method to notice.
A sense of achievement filled him as he watched his physique improve visibly with each passing day.
Naturally, he remained vigilant against the potential arrival of wandering bandits or rival knights from other kingdoms.
Levi was, after all, a tempting target for a robbery.
With Knight Fred by his side, however, Levi didn't need to fret over common enemies.
Even though Knight Fred had been retired for a time, his reputation as the "Snake Knight" still acted as a powerful deterrent throughout the neighboring lands.
Furthermore, Levi would occasionally observe the military drills. Their advancement under the Knight's guidance was obvious. Levi nodded with approval; these men would be a vital resource in the days to come.
Truthfully, the population of Levi’s current domain was tragically small.
After all, he had arrived here with nothing to his name.
The winter months soon drifted away, and the Holy Calendar reached the year 1004, marking the first day of the Primordial Month.
Today was the birthday of the Heavenly Father.
By coincidence, it was also Levi’s birthday.
Levi Snyder had officially turned thirteen years old.
Blackwater Valley remained chilly and desolate. Having just finished a session of his strange, twisting breathing method, Levi stretched his 1.8-meter-tall frame. Standing on the castle’s second floor in a commanding stance, he rested one hand on his hip and looked out over the residents below.
He emitted a dark, snake-like aura—cold and full of calculation. His muscles were rounded and defined, with sharp abdominal lines pressing through his tunic. He looked like an exquisite ancient statue.
Watching him, the serfs could only marvel, "Is he truly only thirteen?"
Levi felt a sense of comfort as he gazed up at the light snowfall.
A new year brought a new atmosphere. The castle was quickly adorned with festive lights and decorations. Maids hurried through the corridors with giggles, busy preparing the feast for the Lord’s birthday dinner.
The soldiers were granted a rare ration of spirits, chatting merrily with Knight Fred. They expressed their thanks to both the Knight and the Lord for their mercy, offering New Year's and birthday blessings to their master.
The other serfs presented gifts of ham, cheese, dried fruits, and wine to show their appreciation to Levi.
In contrast to the many greedy and petty lords of this world, Levi maintained a modern perspective and treated his people with respect.
Consequently, though the serfs were impoverished, they felt a sense of contentment.
In this place, they were treated as humans. Here, they felt secure under the protection of Knight Fred.
Levi was indeed in high spirits, though it wasn't because of the festivities.
After two months of relentless, grueling practice, he had finally broken through to the second level.
