Soon enough, the entire party soared into position over Ressler Canyon, spotting a massive ferocious creature sparkling with a metallic luster beneath the sunlight far away, with a handful of the Empire's combat-ready airships trailing right behind it.
"That’s Dorick alright. (Dragon Language)" The Black Dragon Metheus whispered under his breath.
"Correct." Rein agreed, nodding while smiling.
Right from the initial look, Rein had identified the creature—it was the Steel Dragon Dorick.
"Lord Terrio, ease up on the vigilance; this one’s an ally of Metheus." Rein grinned and gave a light tap on the wide back of the Black Dragon, addressing Sword Saint Terrio next to him.
In order to hide his skill at forming pacts with two Giant Dragons, Rein portrayed the Steel Dragon Dorick as a companion of the Black Dragon Metheus.
Sure, it was still quite the shocker, but at least it rang true.
The remark from his master left Black Dragon Metheus inwardly irritated, ’Who calls that haughty Steel Dragon a friend!’ Yet he had to bottle up the sentiment.
"A friend of your Giant Dragon ally?" Terrio found himself astonished, staring in disbelief at Rein’s Black Dragon Metheus below him, somewhat stunned.
He’d never come across tales of Dragon Knights and Giant Dragons sharing bonds so deeply, to the point a Dragon calls in buddies for backup?
Rein’s statement also stunned the folks nearby, Haleem included!
What?
Given their history as foes, the Federation knew all too well the dynamic between Dragan Empire Dragon Knights and Giant Dragons.
Their tie resembled a partnership agreement more than anything, never one where humans held the upper hand. Dragons carried too much pride to bow to any human lord.
Still, the special Dragon Bloodline in the Royal Family softened the Five-Colored Dragons’ reluctance a lot, forging a solid pact back in Emperor Atlas’s time.
Despite that, no one had ever heard of a Dragon summoning pals to lend a hand like this.
"Steel Dragon Dorick has a thing for metals, which let Metheus bring it along."
"Naturally, it won’t claim any loot from our delve into the Floating City ruins, just munch on a few exotic metals." Rein clarified, smiling.
"Understood, we’re more than happy to have it."
As the Federation’s key figure, Sword Saint Terrio of course embraced adding such a mighty dragon to their ranks.
This uncommon Steel Dragon boasted power on par with Black Dragon Metheus, worth a bunch of Federation powerhouses.
Haleem and his companions nearby quickly lit up with understanding.
Ah, that explains it. Steel Dragons crave metals, and the Floating City overflows with metallic structures, so no surprise it got pulled in—that’s the hook.
"Attendant, hurry and widen the cave entrance, hmm... big enough for both Lord Dragons to slip through comfortably!" Sword Saint Terrio commanded without delay.
"Right away, sir!" A Federation colonel snapped a salute.
...
At the same time, far off, the Zok siblings reacted with shock to the news.
"Wait, what? That... that huge monster got called in by the Empire’s rep, Lord Rein?"
"It got summoned by Rein’s Giant Dragon ally, Black Dragon Metheus. The beast goes by Steel Dragon Dorick." Haleem firmly fixed Ogre Zok’s slip in terminology.
But right then, Ogre paid no mind to Haleem’s tone and muttered:
"A scarce Dragon at the Extremely Old Dragon rank—Steel Dragon, explains why we couldn’t touch it before."
"Unbelievable..." Otto Zok wore a dazed look too, murmuring softly.
Yet it swiftly clicked for him.
Now he grasped why the Steel Dragon had eased off earlier; it all fit.
"Tell the airship squadron to drop the alert status and resume the standard patrol path." Ogre instructed after shaking off the surprise.
"Affirmative, sir."
"Come on, Otto, time to drop by Lord Rein." Ogre told his sibling, his voice laced with regret, all traces of their former smugness gone.
