The Invincible Full-Moon System Chapter 4 Daily Quest

Previously on The Invincible Full-Moon System...
Rex was gravely injured in an explosion while fighting ghouls, but he survived and killed the Ghoul King. As he lay dying, he desperately wished for help, and a beam of moonlight struck him, healing his injuries and binding him to the Invincible Full-Moon System. He later awoke in a hospital, having been comatose for two weeks, and learned he was awarded a Medal of Honour. Rex then discovered a mysterious holographic interface displaying his "Half-Blood" race and other stats.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN HALF-BLOOD!" Rex bellowed, his voice thick with frustration.

While the term Half-blood remained ambiguous, Rex understood enough to know it implied his lineage was no longer pure human, but a hybrid of something else.

Given the atrocities the Supernaturals had committed against mankind and his own parents, Rex harbored a deep-seated hatred for them.

Consequently, he found the details in the race section utterly repulsive.

Rex attempted to alter his race through sheer willpower but failed miserably; the Race category remained fixed. Instead, it began to shimmer with a silvery glow, almost as if the interface were taunting him.

The sensation of being mocked by this game-like screen made his blood boil.

However, he was forced to suppress his rage and regain his composure when a knock sounded at the door. Following the signal, a middle-aged woman stepped into the room.

The woman possessed long, chestnut-brown hair.

One look at her black-rimmed spectacles and the disciplined, academic aura she projected allowed Rex to identify her immediately.

She was Mrs. Greene, Rex’s guardian.

Relief washed over Rex as he gazed at her. ‘I truly believed I’d never see mom again. To think I actually made it out of that incident alive,’ he mused.

Seeing Rex awake and alert, Mrs. Greene froze in her tracks.

Once the reality set in—that Rex had finally emerged from his comatose state—Mrs. Greene couldn't restrain herself. She rushed to his bedside and pulled him into a desperate embrace.

"My sweet boy, I was so afraid I had lost you," she sobbed, overcome with emotion.

Tears streamed down her face like a pure mountain spring as she held Rex tightly. "I haven't slept for weeks since you left for your first mission, and then when the news reached me..."

"You were already in the hospital, clinging to life!"

The raw sorrow in her weeping eyes was palpable, and witnessing Mrs. Greene in such a state caused a sharp pang of guilt in Rex’s heart.

Rex returned the embrace, holding her firmly.

To Rex, the comfort Mrs. Greene provided was beyond compare; she was the solitary beacon of light in the darkness that had consumed his world since his biological parents were murdered.

After she had vented her bottled-up emotions through the hug,

Mrs. Greene began frantically checking Rex for injuries. To her immense relief, she found nothing, as every one of his wounds had undergone a miraculous healing process.

"I'm back, mom," Rex whispered, fighting back his own rising tears.

Upon hearing those words, Mrs. Greene’s face lit up with a radiant smile, which Rex mirrored as they fell into a warm, familiar conversation between mother and son.

It had been years since they had spent time like this.

Rex had only been able to send the occasional letter due to the military's rigorous protocols; his last correspondence had been sent just as he embarked on his debut mission.

As they talked,

The weight of his survival began to settle in, and Rex’s mind started to drift away from the conversation. ‘Who was responsible for saving me? Was it a God? Or perhaps the Devil?’

He recalled his final moments in the Ghouls' Den,

Rex remembered pleading with both the divine and the damned as he lay dying. Uncertain of who had answered his call, he resolved to seek answers from the strange game system he had acquired.

After a short while, Mrs. Greene remarked, "Did you know that you're famous now?"

"During the ceremony, I was presented with two medals in your honor along with a significant sum of money. The United World Organizations claimed it was a token of appreciation for your courage and for risking your life during the operation."

"The nerve of them! Hmph!"

Despite her verbal complaints regarding the Heroes of Dwight City ceremony, her grin betrayed the pride and joy she felt having participated in the event.

It was typical for her; Mrs. Greene came from a lower-class background.

Her lineage lacked an Awakened, meaning her family naturally struggled with finances and social standing. Attending a prestigious event like the Heroes of Dwight City ceremony was a monumental occasion for her.

Even regarding the funds Rex received from the military,

She was always inquisitive about his pay and kept careful track of his paydays. She had even abandoned her late husband for a man with greater financial means.

Her current spouse belonged to the middle class, though her own roots remained firmly in the lower social strata.

Regardless, Rex loved her unconditionally and ignored her flaws; she remained the most vital person left in his life.

Following their lengthy chat, Mrs. Greene prepared to depart to handle some errands.

Before shutting the door, she poked her head back inside. "Oh, I forgot to mention. You’ll be heading to university once you're discharged. The government has established a new institution specifically for Awakened and Military personnel, and you've been enrolled," she informed him while checking an email on her phone.

She added, "They want you to take it easy at the university while they help develop your abilities; it’s a reward for your service. Oh, and I brought your phone."

Mrs. Greene handed the device to Rex and gave a final wave. "I’m leaving now, bye! I’ll check in on you tonight," she said as she exited the room.

Rex sat there, stunned by the news.

‘Me? Attending a university? I’m surprisingly looking forward to it,’ he thought, a smile playing on his lips.

Like any typical youth who couldn't stay away from technology, Rex immediately checked his phone; even during his military training, he would often sneak a few moments to use it.

He noticed three new message notifications awaiting him.

One was from Laura Frostbrand, his childhood friend; another was from his platoon commander; and the final one was from Edward.

He decided to read Laura’s message first.

The text was brief and direct: "I heard you survived, that's good."

The cold brevity of the message left Rex feeling deflated. In truth, he had harbored feelings for Laura since they were children.

Following the death of his parents, Laura had been his constant source of comfort.

However, as Laura matured, she began to pull away from Rex. To this day, he remained ignorant of the reason behind her sudden distance.

Over the years, their bond had stretched thin, resulting in this current estrangement.

Rex had hoped she might at least visit him in person, but reality was harsh; a clinical text message was all he received after nearly dying.

Sighing, Rex moved on to the message from his platoon leader.

True to his character, the commander expressed how impressed he was that Rex had successfully completed such a perilous first mission.

‘He’s definitely one of the better ones compared to the rest,’ Rex thought, smiling slightly.

The last message from Edward mentioned a planned visit, but since it was sent five days ago, Edward had likely already stopped by.

Having finished his messages,

Rex summoned the system by focusing on the word 'Notification' in his mind. The holographic interface shimmered into existence instantly.

He searched for a help or tutorial function, but the screen only displayed: <Notification>, <Stat>, <Skill>, <Inventory>, and <Shop>.

Just as Rex was about to close the screen in annoyance, a new prompt appeared.

<Welcome Host, you have gained the Invincible Full-Moon System>

Rex was increasingly convinced this was some high-tech new game, but to be certain, he began mentally projecting his questions.

‘So, were you the one who rescued me?’ he inquired with curiosity.

<Yes>

Rex pressed further, ‘If that's the case, are you a God? Or a Devil?’

<I am neither God nor Devil>

Rex looked skeptical; the answer was elusive. ‘Hmm... exactly what a God or Devil would claim. What is your objective, then?’

<My purpose is to grant you power; you shall become invincible under the full-moon>

‘That definitely sounds like something a Devil would promise,’ Rex mused.

Testing his theory with a bit of dark humor, he asked, ‘And what is the price for this invincibility under the full moon?’

<Your humanity, your loved ones, and everything you possess>

‘Classic Devil,’ Rex thought, letting out a small chuckle.

Before he could continue his interrogation, a notification flashed—one that looked different from the standard prompts.

<Daily Quest>

During the night, bathe in the Lunar’s blessing for three hours.

Progress: 0/180 minutes

Quest Reward: 50 Exp, A good night’s sleep

Quest Failure: Decrease Sanity by 20%

Rex stared at the daily quest, finding it absurd. ‘The Lunar’s blessing? You want me to sit under the moonlight for three hours? Not a chance,’ he thought.

He decided to dismiss the ridiculous requirement.

‘This is nonsense. What kind of game demands a player sit under the moon? Besides, this hospital lacks a rooftop. The best I could do is hang my head out the window, and I’d look like an idiot doing that for hours.’

The more he dwelled on it, the more annoyed he became with the system.

Still, his curiosity lingered because of the timing of its appearance. He closed the Stat window and navigated to the Skill tab.

<Skills>

<Night Sight (Passive - Low)>

<Creature of the Night (Passive - Mid)>

Rex instinctively reached out to tap the Night Sight skill, but his hand passed through the hologram. ‘Right, I forgot it’s not a physical touch screen,’ he scolded himself.

He focused his thoughts on the Night Sight skill instead.

<Night Sight>

A low-tier skill allowing the host enhanced vision in darkness - Upgradeable

‘Straightforward enough,’ Rex thought. He then turned his attention to the second skill, Creature of the Night, which was unfamiliar to him.

<Creature of the Night>

A mid-tier skill that boosts the host’s stats by 50% during the night, and by 100% during a Full-Moon - Upgradable

As he read the description,

He pondered, ‘This is far more intriguing. So, I’m supposed to gain massive power at night? Seems too good to be true.’ He shook his head, a cynical smile forming.

Growing more skeptical of this bizarre system,

Rex decided to shut down the interface and try to rest. Despite his physical wounds being gone, the mental and physical exhaustion from the mission still weighed heavily on him.

As he closed his eyes, the absurdity of the system remained on his mind.

‘I can’t believe this junk. Stronger at night? That sounds like the power of a Supernatural,’ Rex thought while adjusting his position on the bed.

Feeling the plushness of the bedding, he nestled into the pillows.

‘These pillows are incredibly soft. The military ones were always so stiff and foul-smelling,’ Rex noted. Soon, his eyelids grew heavy, and he drifted off.

Rex remained unaware that his choice to disregard the system would soon become a source of deep regret.
