The Invincible Full-Moon System Chapter 1789: Saving the Condemned
Previously on The Invincible Full-Moon System...
Ever since the werewolves discovered Rex’s existence, they have relentlessly sought to eliminate him. On several occasions, they nearly succeeded, pushing him to the very edge of the grave; however, he persevered each time, emerging more formidable than before.
During his adolescent rise to power, it was the Humans who provided him sanctuary.
As for the werewolves who craved his demise, they were forced into a game of patience, biding their time for the perfect moment.
Despite the humiliation of losing to a "fake" werewolf and the grief of their fallen, the werewolves maintained their composure.
Patience is the hallmark of a true hunter, waiting for that singular, flawless opening to strike.
That opportunity eventually arrived when Humans finally grasped his true nature and branded him a pariah.
Yet, by the time that happened, the window of opportunity for the werewolves had slammed shut.
Rex had already grown fangs and claws of his own.
Any assault against him only served to accelerate his growth, a fact proven time and again by those possessing either the courage or the idiocy to challenge him. It wasn't long before the werewolves were forced to face the grim reality that they had doomed their entire species.
Turning Rex into an enemy was the most catastrophic blunder their race had committed in this new era.
Now, even the ancient Elders from bygone eras lacked the strength to oppose him.
And for those facing extinction, even patience has its limits.
Princess Selene understood this truth perfectly—this path was her final desperate attempt to save the remaining honor of true werewolves. Her people had endured such devastating losses that nothing remained to be stripped away, save for their own lives.
Save for the werewolf blood flowing through their veins.
Evelyn parted her lips to reply, but the words died in her throat.
It wasn't a lack of things to say that stopped her, but a movement caught in her peripheral vision.
It was Gistella.
Her frame was trembling violently, and her hands were balled into white-knuckled fists.
“Gistella...?” Evelyn whispered, her voice laced with concern.
“As the supposed leader of the werewolf race—you possess a remarkable talent for blaming everyone except yourself,” Gistella remarked, her voice shaking with emotion. She looked up, her eyes burning with a mixture of rage and cynicism. “Have you ever actually looked at yourself in a mirror? I used to think that Liches were weakened by their hollow emotions. But you... you’ve proven me wrong.”
Princess Selene’s expression deepened into a clear scowl.
Of everyone in the Silverstar Pack, she had always viewed Gistella as the most submissive.
Gistella’s sudden defiance caught her completely off guard.
“Gistella, what are you doing?” Evelyn asked, placing a hand on her shoulder, equally shocked by the outburst.
At this moment, Gistella had no intention of backing down.
Hearing Princess Selene pin every misfortune on Rex made her blood boil with indignation.
Gistella had planned to let Evelyn handle the negotiations—but it was obvious that Evelyn was too focused on achieving peace at any price, even if it meant ignoring the Princess's blatant hypocrisy. She could no longer remain a silent witness to the venom the Princess was spewing about Rex.
She brushed Evelyn’s hand aside and took a step forward.
“Let’s clarify one thing, Princess...” she hissed in a haunting tone. “You are not the hero of this story.”
“You claim Rex is too dignified to act like a wild beast? That is because, unlike you, he has been stripped of everything he once was. He is a werewolf now, whether he desired it or not.”
Gistella halted ten meters away, staring directly into Princess Selene’s eyes.
She held up a single finger, as if mentally checking off a list of grievances.
Despite being well within the Princess’s striking range, she showed no fear.
Then, she extended her middle finger.
“You say Rex corrupted your 'sacred' lineage with human blood? When? Who are you talking about? Flunra? In case your memory fails you, he attempted to murder Rex first, and this is simply the price he paid. I haven't seen Rex wandering around turning other werewolves into his servants.”
She was on a roll, pouring out her fury in defense of the man who had been cast as the villain.
Next, she raised her ring finger.
“Rex desecrated your holy lands... and why was that, Princess?” Gistella asked, arching an eyebrow as if daring Selene to respond. “Did he arrive there without provocation? No. He went there because your people never stopped threatening him and everyone he cares about.”
It was an undeniable truth.
While Princess Selene kept her face mask-like and neutral, she had no words to refute the accusation.
Gistella’s eyes narrowed as she finally raised her pinky finger.
“And lastly... Rex abandoned the Lunirich Gods?” Gistella’s lips curled into a thin, mocking smile, treating the Princess like a fool blinded by arrogance. “Since you never recognized him as a werewolf, why does that matter to him? What right do your Gods have over him? What loyalty does he owe to deities you claim he was never a part of?”
“Pick a side,” she sneered with pure condescension. “Is he a werewolf or a fraud? Make up your mind.”
A heavy silence fell over the chamber as Gistella’s voice finished echoing.
The silence was suffocating, as Princess Selene found herself unable to offer a rebuttal.
She simply stared at Gistella, her eyes still filled with resentment.
Evelyn had been so preoccupied with trying to see things from Selene’s point of view that she had barely noticed the malice directed at Rex. Now it was clear: Princess Selene was framing him as the aggressor, when in reality, he was always the one being hunted.
Every action he took was merely a reaction to their hostility.
If the Scarlet Banes Kingdom had refrained from aggression, none of this would be happening.
The kingdom wouldn't even have needed to join the alliance.
Remaining neutral like the Undead, Demons, or Shapeshifters would have been enough.
Because those races didn't target Rex or his empire, they remained untouched by his destructive wrath. But the Scarlet Banes Kingdom had doubled down on their hatred, leading to this inevitable conclusion.
“Do you see?” Princess Selene said, shifting her eyes back to Evelyn. “There is no path to peace here.”
She turned her back on them.
“Go now,” she ordered, her voice freezing. “Watch from a distance as your forces crumble. My army is built on endurance. Yours will break, and when they scream for your help... you will be too far away to save them. This is your final opportunity to leave with your dignity intact.”
Evelyn did not move to leave.
Instead, she walked toward Gistella and placed a hand on her shoulder once more.
“Thank you for defending Rex,” she whispered softly. “I’ll handle things from here.”
Gistella had stood up for Rex.
In a normal negotiation, such an outburst would be a disaster, as it only served to provoke the other party.
When both sides are fueled by anger, dialogue usually fails.
However, Evelyn noticed a faint, almost invisible shift in the Princess’s expression caused by Gistella’s words. ‘It’s a miracle she hasn’t lost control, especially with the Blood Moon so near,’ Evelyn thought. ‘But for some reason, she is restraining herself. If anything... her resolve is starting to crack.’
Evelyn could feel it.
It was subtle, but she realized Princess Selene wanted them gone because her own conviction was wavering.
The Princess’s determination was shaking, and she could no longer bear the conversation.
Gistella let out a sharp breath and moved aside, letting Evelyn take the lead again.
“What do you honestly expect to gain from this?” Evelyn walked past Gistella to stand behind the Princess. “Even if you achieve a spectacular victory today, what then? The next person to come for you will be Rex. Do you truly believe you can stand against him?”
No.
Even if Princess Selene remained silent, the reality was obvious.
“If you were facing him, you wouldn't have the luxury of standing here talking,” Evelyn pushed, her tone becoming more urgent. “He shows no mercy to those who have crossed him. None at all. But I... I am not like him.”
She pressed a hand to her chest, her eyes steady.
“I believe in second chances for those who truly want them. Don't let your people be slaughtered. Set aside your pride just this once—work with me,” Evelyn continued, desperate for Selene to recognize the lifeline she was being offered. “I swear to you, a future is possible. For you and for everyone who follows you.”
Princess Selene’s hands clenched into tight fists.
Her shoulders began to tremble.
It was agonizingly difficult to follow Evelyn’s suggestion, regardless of how logical the offer was.
Seeing her resolve breaking, Evelyn didn't give her a moment to think. “I will ensure that the Scarlet Banes Kingdom is not subjected to a tyrant's rule. I will speak to him about your fears and help us find common grou—”
Rumble!
ROAR—!
A massive, earth-shaking roar vibrated through the cathedral walls.
Evelyn and Gistella whipped their heads toward the sound, feeling a titanic aura suddenly join the battle outside. This aura was so immense and suffocating that it felt even denser than Princess Selene’s own power.
It was an entity capable of turning the tide of the entire war on its own.
‘Adhara, who is that? What’s going on out there?’ Evelyn sent a telepathic message.
Adhara’s voice quickly echoed in her mind, ‘It’s Sven! He arrived incredibly fast! I’m going to try and hold him back!’
The news brought a deep scowl to Evelyn’s face.
From the beginning, their plan relied on keeping Sven out of the conflict while they dealt with the rebellion.
If he joined the fray, the Great Army would be in serious jeopardy.
Sven’s presence was the equivalent of Rex appearing on the battlefield for the Great Army—a shift that usually meant certain doom for the opposition. Now, Evelyn had to force Selene to stand down, and she had to do it immediately.
Any further delay would mean this war could only end in a total bloodbath.
“I have already embraced my death,” Princess Selene stated, seemingly unbothered by Sven’s arrival, which should have been a tactical advantage for her. “It makes no difference to me if we fall now or die later by his claws. In the end, struggling is all we have left. We would rather die...”
Princess Selene turned back to face Evelyn.
The malice was gone, replaced by a cold, silent resignation.
“I have been a slave before. From the dawn of the Ancient Humans until their downfall. I know better than anyone that an oppressor never truly feels for the oppressed,” Princess Selene exhaled heavily. “How can you possibly promise that the Royal Black Prince won't discriminate against us? It is an impossibility.”
She began to walk away, ascending the pile of bones once more.
“Just go—and let us finish this fight,” she said, her voice sounding exhausted. “Don't worry, I won't harm you or the members of the Silverstar Pack. If you want to help, then tell him that. Perhaps then he will spare my people from a horrific end.”
Even if a part of her wanted to trust Evelyn, she simply couldn't bring herself to do it.
Her past trauma was too vivid, and there were no certainties if she surrendered to the empire.
It was too big a risk.
She refused to gamble with the loyalty and honor of her people; the stakes were simply too high.
“Come on, Evelyn,” Gistella said, grabbing her arm and pulling. “There’s no point in talking to her anymore.”
She tried to lead Evelyn toward safety. With Sven now on the field, Gistella was worried she might not be able to adequately protect her.
After a few steps, Evelyn resisted and stood her ground.
“What about the Great Luna?!” she cried out.
Hearing those words, Princess Selene paused and shook her head as she continued her climb.
She couldn't believe Evelyn was still trying to find a peaceful resolution to the carnage.
“Can the Great Luna not soothe her Alpha, the Werewolf Origin?” Evelyn continued. “Can she not guide the Werewolf Origin toward a more righteous path? Can she not temper his fury and show him a better way? In case you’ve forgotten, that is exactly what she did during the Massacre of Inklaus!”
Tap—!
Princess Selene stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief.
“I can do it, too,” Evelyn declared with absolute confidence. “I can persuade Rex to move past this and start anew.”
Princess Selene looked over her shoulder, her face a mask of confusion. “How do you know about the Massacre of Inklaus?”
Anticipating the question, Evelyn allowed a small smirk to play on her lips.
She just needed to earn Selene’s trust, and this was the key.
She pointed toward her moon earrings, which Princess Selene was only noticing for the first time.
“How do you think I know...?”
“G-Great Luna?!”
