The Invincible Full-Moon System Chapter 1770: Red Sheen’s Intervention
Previously on The Invincible Full-Moon System...
Both physical and mental exhaustion weighed heavily on him.
His reserves were spent, drained of both life energy and voidal energy.
Toxic substances coursed through his veins.
And then there were the grievous wounds.
Rex’s current state was essentially a checklist of every debilitating condition one could suffer.
If someone sought to commit an assassination, this was the ultimate window of opportunity.
No amount of strategic planning could rival the perfection of this moment; a target ambushed while beyond the point of collapse. Empress Morgana seized that opening without hesitation. She simply could not conceive of any way Rex could withstand her.
In her mind, claiming victory over the Archangel of Knives should have left him utterly defenseless.
However, she was mistaken.
Clang—!
The eyes of Empress Morgana widened as an unseen energy halted her blade.
It was a force she could not detect at all, even with her immense power.
It felt... unnatural.
Furthermore, the way Rex’s head had whipped around to anticipate the strike was eerily mechanical, as if it were an automated response. It was as though his head possessed a sovereign will, guided by a primal instinct that had taken the reins to alert him of the lethal threat.
Rex was just as startled as Empress Morgana.
From the moment he exited the Blank state by shutting down his new organ, he sensed it remained partially functional. Despite his efforts to completely deactivate it, the organ persisted, stubbornly continuing its rhythm.
He clearly lacked total mastery over it.
He made a mental note to consult Kei Xun about this later.
But that wasn't the full explanation.
While Rex didn't fully comprehend the mechanics, he knew this phenomenon was tied to his thundering heartbeat.
Though the conflict had ended a while ago, his physiology refused to settle.
That agitation kept the new organ in an active state.
Seconds prior, when Empress Morgana initiated her sneak attack, his senses picked it up, but physically reacting was a different matter entirely. Under normal circumstances, he would have moved easily, but not in this broken state. Yet, at the final millisecond, a surge of power erupted within him, pushing his reflexes to the absolute limit.
It forced him back into the Blank state and prevented the blade from taking his head.
"H-How?" Empress Morgana hissed through clenched teeth. "How are you still capable of this?!"
She was incredulous that Rex still possessed a hidden trump card.
Unknown to her, this ability had been acquired only recently, shortly before Stelios met his end.
Even though she couldn't shift the barrier, she continued to press forward, refusing to admit she couldn't dominate Rex in a direct clash. The strain was visible; her arms shook violently, and her life energy flared with desperate intensity.
It was futile.
The invisible wall remained immovable.
"Evelyn warned me you wouldn't keep your word, and she was right. I placed my trust in you, and I was even prepared to overlook your betrayal since you seemed forced into it," Rex said, turning his entire body to confront her directly. "But now you have a choice... and you’ve still chosen incorrectly."
"I am the final scion of the Angel Race in this realm. How can I stand by and permit this?!"
"Stop lying to yourself. You aren't an Angel, and you never will be. You are a Spirit. Face the truth."
Boom—!
A fresh explosion of energy erupted from Empress Morgana, causing the ground beneath them to fracture.
In the void behind Rex, a bow of intricate, holy radiance materialized instantly.
The string pulled back by itself, vibrating with lethal intent, and discharged a single bolt of pure light. A massive concentration of life energy was packed into that arrow—creating a projectile capable of slaying an Eternal Spirit ten times over.
Enhanced by her specialized gear to increase velocity and power, the arrow flew.
But once again, Rex’s reflexes spiked.
He shifted his weight, letting the arrow graze past him and bury itself in the earth with a loud crack.
Rex glanced at the quivering arrow in the ground before turning his gaze back to Empress Morgana.
A deep, guttural growl vibrated in his chest as his glowing eyes burned with murderous intent.
"No, stop!" Amanir’s voice rang out the moment he felt Rex’s killing intent, warning him that executing Empress Morgana would only sabotage their progress. "You cannot kill her. If you expose her crimes to the emperor, she is finished."
Hearing those words, Rex allowed his tense frame to relax slightly.
He looked at Empress Morgana, who was still intent on his death, and tilted his head curiously.
"What is your objective here?" Rex asked softly. "What do you gain by ending my life? I don't understand."
"I require no justification to slay the enemy of my people!" Empress Morgana screamed—sending a shockwave that made the entire platform tremble. "You murdered an Archangel, and that is more than enough reason to see you dead!"
"You mean this?" Rex held up the severed, gruesome head of Stelios. "Is this really the being you're so worried about? I don't know what lies he told you, but I know the Angels: none of them are capable of reason."
Even amidst the chaos of the previous fight, Rex had noticed how Stelios treated her.
He viewed her as nothing more than a tool.
Why would Empress Morgana risk everything for someone who held her in such contempt?
Conversely, Rex had shown her respect from the moment he first heard her name; every move he made considered her welfare. He had hoped to earn her alliance. Yet, that foundation of mutual respect turned to ash the moment she realized he was the foe of Stelios.
And now, he was Stelios’ slayer.
Her enmity was instant and total, rendering all his previous gestures meaningless.
Even though Rex hadn't started this fight.
In fact, he had no prior grudge against the Angels.
Having been targeted out of nowhere by a greedy Archangel, he was the victim in this scenario.
Yet he was the one being hunted. And she still chose the side of the one who looked down on her.
Truly a twisted situation.
"If you fail to kill me this instant, I swear I will mobilize the entire empire to track you down," Empress Morgana declared with fierce resolve. "I will brand you a public enemy, flay you, and leave your corpse for the commoners to desecrate."
"Are you listening to this, Amanir?" Rex asked, turning his head slightly while keeping his eyes locked on her.
"Yes," Amanir sighed, struggling to free himself. "Yes, I heard her."
"And you still believe I shouldn't kill her?"
"Yes... I know it sounds foolish. But we cannot provoke the emperor. You would be executed instantly."
"Ah, I have my doubts about that," Rex smirked, looking down at Empress Morgana as if she were a child throwing a fit. He reached out and cupped her face, staring into her eyes. "Don't worry, I won't kill you. I'm going to hand you over to the emperor's judgment."
As he spoke, Empress Morgana continued her attempts to decapitate him, her arm muscles bulging with the effort. But she simply could not move. It was a baffling frustration—she had no way to break his hold.
Her only small victory was a violent jerk of her head, pulling her face away from Rex’s hand.
"Open that chest quickly, Amanir," Rex commanded, his tone sharpening.
While he could restrain Empress Morgana for now, he was effectively pinned unless he chose to attack her.
And currently, even if he wanted to, he lacked the strength to deliver a knockout blow.
Rex had to depend on this mysterious new power, though its nature remained unclear.
"You won't get away with this," she spat, teeth grinding. "You won't escape!"
"You think so?" Rex grinned, casting his gaze toward the sky. "What do you think about that?"
Empress Morgana froze; her heart skipped a beat.
She looked up, fearing reinforcements had arrived. Stelios had been using the Major Law of Radiance to mask their location, but with him dead, the distortion was gone. Anyone connected to the empire could find them now.
That meant Kaine, or perhaps the emperor himself.
However, the sight greeting her was far more troubling.
"No one would take your word, Empress..."
A figure began to manifest from the light.
It was a face Rex recognized—the priestess he had encountered during the creation of the Blood Moon Echo.
High Priestess Alana.
The moment his trial from the Highseat of Invincibility ended and he became a Blank, Rex had sensed her nearby. It appeared she had been attempting to enter the Tomb of Heroes for some time, but was held back by a barrier at the arena's edge.
The Highseat of Invincibility had barred her from intervening.
And knowing Stelios, he likely used his own methods to trap Rex inside.
Either way, she had been locked out until now.
Rex realized he could still summon the Silverstar Pack, which was a significant detail.
Perhaps the Highseat of Invincibility acknowledged those serving a Scion.
High Priestess Alana floated down.
She brushed aside the glowing bow hovering behind Rex as if it were a mere toy, then fixed a stern look on Empress Morgana. "The Divine Saintess has made her position clear to the empire," she announced, her narrowed eyes conveying the weight of her words. "Should the empire move against Lord Rex, the Divine Saintess will withdraw her support from the empire entirely."
It was a shocking, monumental proclamation.
It stunned both Empress Morgana and Rex.
Rex then remembered Kei Xun mentioning that she was no longer a candidate.
Something had clearly happened involving another Scion, removing her from the running.
And now, she had allied with him.
A small smile touched Rex’s lips at this unexpected stroke of luck.
He had hoped Alana might intimidate the Empress, knowing she had backed him previously, but he hadn't expected her to drop such a devastating ultimatum. "See?" Rex’s grin widened. "Surrender now, and I’ll leave you to explain yourself to your emperor. I won't interfere."
"If you truly care for the empire, you will drop your weapon," Alana added, increasing the pressure.
Rex and Alana watched Empress Morgana closely.
They could practically see her mind racing through every possible outcome.
Every tactic was reflected in the slight twitching of her face.
Finally, her grip on the hilt faltered; there was no viable path forward.
Attempting to kill Rex now would trigger the empire's downfall.
At least, that was the conclusion Rex hoped she was reaching.
He couldn't kill her because she was the Empress, and such an act would cross a dangerous line.
But she couldn't kill him without dooming her own realm.
The collapse might not be instant, but once neighboring nations learned the empire had lost the backing of Kei Xun and the Divine Saintess, they would swarm and dismantle it.
Just as Rex prepared to release her, his instincts screamed.
His eyes snapped wide as a crimson glow descended from the heavens.
DEG—!
Rex’s heart hammered against his ribs as he recognized the energy.
He didn't have time to look up before he saw Empress Morgana’s blade ignite with a familiar scarlet light. "T-This is..." Rex’s pupils contracted as he leaped backward. "Blood Moon energy? Kaiser?!"
Without a moment's pause, Empress Morgana’s eyes flashed as she lunged with her sword.
Crash—!
