The flame elementals swiftly pushed the generated magma out of the crystal chamber, a familiar process to sustain their habitat. Shota exited the chamber, adjusting to the residual heat, and confirmed with the elder that the ritual was complete. As they ventured outside the volcano, an intense wave of heat assaulted Shota, forcing him to draw on Ifrit's power for protection. The landscape had transformed with newfound vitality, sprouting resilient plants amid the lava, which excited the flame elementals into playful exploration while Shota observed the changes and pondered the plants' potential.

During the opening day, I came upon an unusual fish gliding right through the lava.

The odd part about the fish had nothing to do with its looks, as it appeared just like any ordinary koi fish.

What made it truly bizarre was how this fish could swim in the lava without getting burned to ashes.

Without question, this creature was similar to the plant, having evolved to fit its surroundings and thrive amid the lava like this.

To evolve in such a manner, there must have been something extraordinary about it.

Being a mobile creature, it proved simpler to identify the nature of this fish's evolution.

In truth, it was straightforward: the fish possessed an affinity for fire elemental energy.

This trait let the fish draw in the heat from the lava it navigated, enabling survival despite being enveloped in molten rock.

Beyond that, it granted the fish the power to manipulate fire elemental energy by generating flames.

This served primarily as a defensive measure rather than anything offensive.

As I tried to get closer, the fish whipped its head toward me and unleashed a burst of flames in my direction. My protections held firm, so the fish's flames weren't potent enough to penetrate them.

Still, it definitely surprised me to have a fish spew flames my way.

Yet for the flame elementals, such an attack meant little.

Flame elementals were composed of fire from the start, making it effortless for them to shrug off the fish's flames. Those weren't nearly hot enough to injure the flame elementals.

All that occurred was they chuckled at the flames that struck their forms.

Another detail I observed was the flame elementals deploying nets to haul in these fish at a frantic pace. They fished with the hunger of those who hadn't eaten in ages.

A portion of me even pondered if their overzealous fishing might deplete the population entirely.

Nevertheless, the flame elementals assured me that wouldn't happen.

"Just yesterday, there weren't nearly as many fish. The ceremony we performed restored the vitality to our rivers."

Having dwelled here forever, they understood this realm better than anyone.

Still, one more question lingered for me, "And what about the items you offered at the ceremony earlier? If numbers were low then, how did you manage to use them?"

"We must honor those who grant us this way of life. Times weren't always this smooth for us in the past..."

"That's what the ancestors have shared, of course."

A wry smile crossed my face upon hearing this, though I held back from probing further.

...

On the following day, I noticed land-based beings beginning to populate the area.

It felt like each day unveiled a fresh wonder.

However, given the advancement of these terrestrial creatures, it seemed odd to believe they'd emerged so recently. No traces of such land dwellers had existed before, and the flame elementals confirmed this firmly.

Reflecting on it, though, it appeared more probable that these beings had been concealed in their dens due to the lack of sustenance here. Hiding away was logical, or they couldn't have multiplied so swiftly.

These varied land animals mirrored the lava river fish in their adaptations.

Each one had developed the same fire elemental energy control as the fish.

Without this capability, survival in such an environment would have been impossible.

Thus, all of them could exhale flames akin to the fish.

The spectacle of these creatures belching fire was astonishing, but the flame elementals managed them effectively.

"What sorts of things do you consume?" I inquired upon witnessing their pursuit of the land animals.

The flame elementals regarded me with puzzled expressions, as if baffled by the query, before providing concrete illustrations.

"Anything works for us if it can be incinerated."

To demonstrate, they gathered various objects and tossed them into the fires that formed their faces. Upon entry, those items were swiftly reduced to cinders by the intense flames of the flame elementals.

In a sense, it resembled consumption...

Yet it struck me more as incineration and elimination given their method of 'feeding'.

However, I realized the true essence they drew from the burned materials was the accumulated fire elemental energy within.

As entities born from elemental energy, it stood to reason that the flame elementals sustained themselves on energy too.

The manner in which they acquired it was simply peculiar to witness.

This also evoked the other trait unique to flame elementals—or all elementals—that explained why we shielded them from Destruction's forces.

Such a power did appear somewhat overpowered, especially with their capacity to assimilate various energies.

But I recognized one type they couldn't handle, or else divine protection wouldn't be necessary.

"Divine energy truly stands apart."
