Once Meng Xinian and Dai Gang had departed, Jiang Xiao allowed a smile to cross her face. She secured the door and retreated into the bedroom, where she moved Meng Xinian’s quilt and pillow into her space.
She had a specific task to complete within the space: inscribing the Calm Spirit Talisman Diagram onto his bedding to ensure he achieved the highest quality of rest.
A body and mind can only truly flourish if one enjoys restorative sleep every single night.
With the diagram finished, she turned her attention to the space's garden, harvesting every available tea leaf and flower.
She made it a habit to pick them regularly even without a specific need, as they possessed a rapid regrowth rate. By the time she finished processing her haul into various items, the clock had already struck ten in the evening.
Just as she exited the space, intending to retire for the night, a faint tapping sounded against the outer door.
The knocking was incredibly soft; had the night not been so profoundly silent, the sound would have escaped her notice entirely.
Slipping on a coat, she approached the entrance. Pressing her ear to the wood, she caught the sound of Meng Xinian’s hushed voice from the other side.
"Little, it’s me."
Jiang Xiao was momentarily lost for words. The moment she unlatched the door, Meng Xinian slipped inside and shut it firmly behind him.
His gaze remained fixed intensely upon her.
"Brother Xinian, what brings you back here again?"
With an air of utter nonchalance, Meng Xinian replied, "Since my wife is here, wouldn't it be far too cruel to force us to sleep apart?"
It was clear he had already resolved to sneak back under the cover of darkness every night.
"Couples usually maintain separate quarters before they are officially wed," Jiang Xiao remarked, caught between amusement and exasperation.
"Let others do as they wish; we are different. Come now, Little, let us get some rest."
With gentle coaxing, Meng Xinian pulled Jiang Xiao toward the bed.
Predictably, Meng Xinian nearly devoured Jiang Xiao once again that night.
In the end, she had to resort to threatening to boot him off the bed entirely before he finally settled down.
The following morning, Jiang Xiao rose early to prepare the morning meal. True to his routine, Meng Xinian went for an early run and returned carrying a fresh portion of pork for her.
Jiang Xiao headed to the rooftop to gather green onions. After finely chopping them, she combined the herbs with minced meat and eggs to create a fragrant omelet. She also prepared smashed cucumbers, utilizing spirit spring water to enhance the flavor and soaking the vegetables in it beforehand. To round out the meal, she stir-fried some savory shredded pork and simmered a pot of porridge.
Once the spread was laid out, she sent Meng Xinian to invite the Elder Couple Yang for breakfast.
Porridge was the ideal dish for her purposes, as it allowed her to incorporate a significant amount of spirit spring water.
Meng Xinian had to knock repeatedly before Old Yang finally answered the door.
"Old Yang, is something wrong? You aren't usually a heavy sleeper. I’ve been knocking for quite a while," Meng Xinian remarked, finding the delay unusual.
Old Yang, however, appeared to be radiating vitality and good spirits.
"That is true. I slept exceptionally well last night—very deeply indeed. I only just woke up when I heard your knocking," Old Yang replied, feeling as though he had been rejuvenated overnight.
It was a wonderful change; not only had his appetite returned to normal, but he could now enjoy a peaceful, undisturbed sleep.
His wife shared this newfound sense of well-being.
The items provided by Jiang Xiao were nothing short of miraculous.
It wasn't just her cooking that held such power; even the tea she brewed possessed extraordinary properties.
He truly felt as though Jiang Xiao was a person sent by fate to be his savior.
"You have arrived quite early today, haven't you?"
Old Yang inquired.
Because Meng Xinian and Jiang Xiao were clearly inseparable yet had not yet formalized their union, the traditional values of the elderly suggested they should not be staying under the same roof.
Meng Xinian, however, showed no sign of embarrassment as he nodded.
"Indeed. I came early so I wouldn't miss out on Little's breakfast, which is always made with love."
"You speak the truth. Being able to eat a meal prepared by Xiao Jiang is a genuine blessing," Old Yang said, his hunger getting the better of him. He called back into the house, "Old lady, are you ready yet? Move quickly, I am famished!"
