Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s Chapter 2297: 2233: Ran Into a Ghost When Going Out

Previously on Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s...
Chiang Xiao’s attempt at a private dinner for Old Yang is interrupted when several colleagues, including Chen Yujun and Zhao Ren, arrive uninvited to the dorms. Despite her lingering resentment over their previous attempts to set Meng Xinian up with another woman, she is forced to play the hospitable hostess when they bring their own food and drinks. As she retreats to the kitchen to prepare additional dishes, Meng Xinian returns home to find his house crowded with unexpected guests. The atmosphere becomes increasingly tense and restrained as the group realizes that the high-ranking Old Yang and his wife are also in attendance.

"It is merely a dinner together, so why is everyone making such a scene?" Old Yang questioned.

Just then, Sister-in-law Yang entered alongside Long Xiaocai, both carrying trays laden with two plates of food. Long Xiaocai held a dish in her hand, a smile gracing her lips as she stepped inside.

Both women were momentarily taken aback by the sight of the group standing there, staring one another down in silence.

Long Xiaocai cast a glance toward Meng Xinian and smiled faintly. Stepping around Sister-in-law Chen, she set the food on the table before addressing him. "Great Officer Meng, I prepared these two dishes myself. I acted improperly toward you in the past, so please do not take it to heart. In a moment, I shall toast you three times with soft drinks instead of wine to make amends. Shall we let bygones be bygones?"

Meng Xinian’s expression grew grim.

Upon hearing her words, he pressed his thin lips into a hard line. Without uttering a single syllable, he retreated three paces, deliberately creating a wide gap between them.

He then projected his voice toward the kitchen.

"Wife, I need you to deal with this."

Long Xiaocai: "..."

What was the meaning of this?

The entire room was left in a state of shock.

Even Old Yang and his wife found themselves feeling utterly confused.

Chiang Xiao emerged from the kitchen, her eyebrows arching when she spotted Long Xiaocai. She turned to Meng Xinian and asked, "Brother Xinian, what exactly do you want me to handle?"

"Didn't you tell me that I'm not allowed to say a single extra word to other women? Therefore, if someone needs to be shown the door, that task falls to you."

Asking someone to leave...

Chiang Xiao nearly burst out laughing.

However, recalling that he was the one who caused this, she replied with feigned annoyance, "What does that have to do with me?"

Long Xiaocai had never been subjected to such treatment before. No matter how thick-skinned she claimed to be, her face began to flush with heat.

She looked toward Chiang Xiao and spoke, "Chiang Xiao, I am aware that I have been somewhat unfair to you regarding Great Officer Meng, which is why I came here to offer my apologies..."

Chiang Xiao immediately cut her off with a wave of her hand. "Wait, what did you just claim? That you and Brother Xinian are seeing each other? In what way are you seeing each other? And where exactly is this happening?"

Meng Xinian ground his teeth in frustration. "Seeing each other, my foot! When have I ever laid eyes on her? Was my skull crushed by a tank, or did I encounter a ghost? Why would I be so completely out of my mind?"

The words were undeniably brutal.

Yet, Meng Xinian rarely showed any kindness to women other than Chiang Xiao, especially one so brazen.

When had he ever even noticed her?

"If simply entering the military compound counts as seeing someone, then who knows how many times Sister-in-law Chen and Sister-in-law Zhao have 'seen' me!"

Sister-in-law Chen’s expression shifted, and she couldn't help but cast a guilty look at Chen Yujun.

She realized that this plan had once again been utterly ruined.

Who could have predicted that Long Xiaocai would spout such nonsense?

And who could have guessed that Meng Xinian would be so ruthless as to give Long Xiaocai no face at all?

Chen Yujun’s face turned a shade of sickly green with rage as he glared at her.

This woman was nothing but a troublemaker!

He had genuinely believed she wanted to apologize to Meng Xinian and Chiang Xiao. Instead, she had dragged Long Xiaocai into this mess.

Was this not just inviting disaster?

Long Xiaocai’s face burned with such intensity it felt as though Meng Xinian had slapped her several times.

She clenched her teeth.

She truly had not expected Meng Xinian to be so devoid of gallantry, refusing to spare her any dignity.

She was a woman, after all. Given what she said, he should have considered her pride and avoided such a blunt clarification.

But she had severely underestimated Meng Xinian’s refusal to accept even a shred of false blame.

If Meng Xinian knew what she was thinking, he would have surely scoffed at her.

She was delusional. If he accepted such a lie, how could he ever look Chiang Xiao in the eye?
