Vritra descended toward the massive clothing establishment, his feet touching the pavement before he stepped inside. A flurry of maids immediately swarmed him, eager to escort him through the doors.
By now, news of his return had permeated every corner of the realm.
Making his way to the second floor, Vritra spotted Gunter and his wife, Ava, waiting for him.
"Son, you’ve finally arrived!" the pair exclaimed in unison. Ava lunged forward, pulling him into a tight embrace.
Although she appeared frail, her recovery was progressing at a rapid pace; she would likely be back to full health in no time.
"Oh, I see. But what was the reason for summoning me?" Vritra asked as Ava stepped back to inspect him.
Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears. He had matured so significantly and looked so striking that she almost failed to recognize him.
Curiously, Ava realized she possessed no clear memory of his former appearance.
"Has your father not told you? The Ford family is hosting an event for you tomorrow," Ava explained, "It is there that you shall meet your future bride."
She paused, then added: "This is a monumental occasion for our family, so you must look your absolute best."
‘An event... I wonder what they are plotting,’ Vritra mused, questioning how this gathering would lead him to information regarding Yennefer.
"It looks like they plan to broadcast the marriage arrangement to the public. They likely want to introduce you to the world, among other hidden agendas. Hubby, this is going to be entertaining," Yasmine remarked, circling him in her spectral form.
‘Whatever their schemes are, my own objectives remain unchanged.’
As he spoke with her, Ava guided him toward a seat.
"But if the two of you are already betrothed, why are they still conducting marriage trials for that Tiny girl? Was it simply because Art had vanished? Perhaps they will scrap the trials now," the dragoness pondered aloud.
In truth, Vritra had little need for new attire. With Goop at his disposal, he could manifest any garment he desired.
Nevertheless, the enthusiastic couple dragged him from shop to shop, purchasing an array of items until Ava finally grew weary, bringing the shopping spree to an end.
Vritra retreated to his quarters, facing a quiet afternoon with nothing to occupy his time.
However, shortly after Yasmine emerged from the fourth dimension, a sharp knock echoed from the door.
"Enter." Vritra sat upright as Yasmine vanished once more. Using dust manipulation, he disengaged the lock from within.
"Cough... Hello, nephew. I received word about tomorrow's festivities." A timid-looking, middle-aged man stepped into the room.
Vritra recognized him from the arena a few days prior; he was one of the few who hadn't rushed to attack him, yet had clearly stood in opposition.
"Why have you come?" Vritra’s expression remained stony, but the sheer intensity of his gaze made the man tremble.
"U-Uhm... P-Please forgive my previous disrespect. After witnessing your true p-prowess, I am convinced there is no better leader than you. I have brought these gifts; please, accept them."
He retrieved several items from his storage glyph, arranging them carefully on the table.
"Is there something else?" Vritra prompted after a moment, noticing the man lingering awkwardly.
"Uhm, I just wanted you to know you have my full support. I... I heard the news about the marriage announcement," he added slowly. Previously, this information had been a guarded secret known only to a select few.
"And?" Vritra raised an eyebrow, curious to hear more.
"Sigh... This must be incredibly difficult for you, making such a massive sacrifice for the sake of the family. Just know that I will assist you in any way possible." The man sighed, looking at Vritra with a gaze full of pity before standing up to leave.
"Huh? What are you talking about?" Vritra’s confusion deepened.
"It’s all right. I know you have no desire to marry her and that this union is being forced upon you. Just stay strong." With a final, sorrowful pat to his own chest, he departed.
Art’s uncle felt a wave of guilt; he couldn't believe he had once opposed a man who was now sacrificing his own happiness for the clan’s benefit.
Vritra sat in silence, baffled. What kind of woman was his fiancée that even his former detractors felt sorry for him?
KNOCK KNOCK
Another knock disrupted his train of thought.
"Enter..." Vritra called out. This time, another uncle from a branch family arrived, accompanied by his wife.
"Sigh, Art, we know how hard this is. We apologize for our previous misconceptions. Please take these gifts and find it in your heart to forgive us," the man pleaded.
"Your fiancée... Sigh, that woman. I know her reputation is terrible and she isn't nearly good enough for you, but thank you for taking one for the family," the woman added, her eyes filled with genuine sympathy.
Vritra: "..."
Yasmine: "..."
That was only the beginning. A steady stream of uncles and aunts soon followed, all bearing various tributes.
Even those who had been brutally beaten by him earlier were carried in by servants just to express their condolences.
Before long, the room was overflowing with presents as nearly every family member paid their respects.
...
‘Something is seriously wrong here. Why are even these people pitying me? They are the ones who can’t even walk, yet they think my future is the one that's bleak?’
Vritra rubbed his temples, eventually instructing the guards to bar any further visitors from entering.
"No matter the situation, it isn't as if you actually have to go through with the marriage. We will vanish the moment we obtain the information we need," Yasmine said, reappearing and reclining on the bed with her head in his lap.
"...True. But when has my life ever been that simple? We’ll see how tomorrow unfolds when I meet the Ford family. Sigh... if only Yennefer were here, I wouldn't have to wait to deal with that giant," Vritra thought with a sigh.
The remainder of the day was mostly quiet, though many others attempted to see him.
Even Gunter stopped by to offer moral support and an apology.
Vritra couldn't help but wonder how catastrophic this woman must be to elicit such a reaction.
Was she hideously ugly, incredibly foul-tempered, or something even worse?
He eventually pushed the thoughts aside, allowing his dragon waifu to comfort him after locking the door and erecting powerful barriers.
The two shared an intimate night, and as usual, Yasmine’s desire seemed bottomless.
She constantly craved more of him; fortunately, Vritra possessed the stamina to keep pace and even exceed her libido.
Time blurred as they talked and indulged in one another, only stopping when the night had nearly reached its end.
It was so late that the sun began to rise only an hour after they finished.
Vritra fell into a deep sleep, holding his stunning wife in his arms, their bare skin pressed together.
Because of the barriers surrounding the room, no sound penetrated the walls, and nobody was able to force the door open.
Consequently, the star of the Ford family’s grand event was nowhere to be found, sleeping soundly as the ceremony was set to begin.
It wasn't until nine o'clock, after a restorative rest, that he finally woke up and noticed the massive crowd waiting outside.
