Lyrate secured the unconscious prisoners in the teleportation hub with binding roots before stepping through a portal to a bustling transit world teeming with merchants and ships. Ignoring restrictions, she swiftly eliminated three Feran inspectors and subdued arriving security with her plant-based powers, commandeering a sleek vessel and destroying pursuing patrols with crimson energy arcs. Arriving at Argus, she passed through the planetary shield and met Primus, informing him of their conquest of Hollow Star's primary base on Abor and the need for his forces to join a simultaneous purge of the organization's seventy-two remaining connected outposts.

Silver and I lingered in the heart of the capital's plaza as the world gradually eased into its fresh hush. The purple light now encircling Abor's skies had softened a touch while the planet adapted to the change in command. The city nearby endured intact, even if broad swaths of it got cleared out from the prior fight. The teleportation points stayed operational.

Silver glided idly through the heavens overhead prior to landing by my side once more, tucking his wings away behind him. “You know,” he remarked in an offhand manner, surveying the urban landscape, “this location seems far more pleasant now that nearly all the repulsive beings inhabiting it have vanished.”

“That was the plan,” I responded.

Once Knight and Lyrate had left, I tracked and wiped out every lingering Phantom in the metropolis. Taking them down boosted my level even higher, lifting it to 489.

He flashed a subtle smile. “I like it.”

Our exchange halted as a gateway in the teleportation center burst into activation. The round arch flared up abruptly, its etched borders glowing while the space inside swirled into a rich purple vortex.

Shortly after, shapes started emerging from it.

Knight came out ahead, his dark garments gleaming as he exited the portal like he was back from an everyday walk instead of a venture spanning sectors. His tail swayed idly in his wake as his piercing eyes quickly scanned the square.

The rest trailed after him.

Steve passed through afterward, rolling his shoulders while he eyed the city with evident interest. North came next in silence, her gaze already probing the area. Ragnar's massive build blocked the portal opening momentarily before he moved out of the way, and Aurora materialized next to him, her features etched with obvious annoyance.

Ash slipped out at the end, giving the portal setup a quick look before directing his focus ahead. The entrance faded behind the group as the dimensional flow steadied once more.

They dashed into view and materialized in the main square.

Silver folded his arms while they drew near. “That was quick.”

Knight shot him a look. “I lack wings to hinder my speed.”

Silver inclined his head. “Indeed, quite a pity for you.”

Steve shifted his gaze from one of us to the other before settling on me with a broad smile. “So this serves as the Hollow Star's headquarters. It's not quite like I pictured.”

“Yeah. I felt the same shock. Who could've guessed they'd control an entire world and its society.”

Aurora advanced until she positioned herself right before me, her blonde locks swaying gently with her motion. A hint of humor played across her features as she examined my expression.

“You put me in charge of the mission,” Aurora stated evenly, regarding me with her typical subtle, insightful stare, “yet you called me back before we could truly get started.”

“I required your presence here,” I answered.

She angled her head a fraction, her blonde hair moving along. “I realized that. But was our return really so pressing? You might have allowed me a bit longer.”

“Well,” I offered with a light shrug, “I'm short on people for my upcoming scheme, so your return was necessary.”

Her gaze sharpened as she scrutinized me more intently.

“Is that truly why,” she inquired deliberately, “or did you just miss your lady?”

A soft laugh slipped from me before I turned toward North. She held my eyes and offered a brief, entertained grin.

“I'm not so lucky, Aurora,” she replied with a playful smirk.

Knight picked that instant to move up, smoothly straightening the cuffs of his dark robe. “I've already briefed them on the circumstances on the way over.”

Steve dipped his head in confirmation. “Seventy-two outposts,” he noted, eyeing the damaged urban sprawl as though picturing them simultaneously. “That's an impressive roster.”

I shot them both a wordless nod of thanks for redirecting the topic.

North crossed her arms casually, fully grasping what had transpired, even if the subtle arch of her mouth indicated she relished the scene more than she showed.

Ragnar stayed quiet yet alert, tracking the discussion without input.

Ash lifted his head after finishing his scan of the city. “The portal system holds up remarkably well,” he observed offhandedly. “The creators of this setup clearly understood their craft.”

Silver bent in toward me and murmured audibly enough for all to catch, “He's saying the betrayers were skilled.”

“They had ample time to ready themselves,” I countered.

Aurora glanced over the nearby buildings again before fixing her eyes on me. “So what's our next move?”

“We're holding for Lyrate. She's off fetching Primus and additional forces for us.” I explained.

Silver grinned a tad at the news. “With her in the mix, I bet some intense event is unfolding elsewhere at this very moment.”

Knight offered a brief nod of assent.

I cleared my throat uneasily and looked over at North.

“Um… North,” I uttered, scratching the nape of my neck, “could you join me for a moment?”

One of her brows rose faintly, yet she approached regardless.

At our backs, Silver promptly leaned in toward Steve with feigned eagerness. “You realize,” he declared loudly, “this metropolis likely boasts superb cuisine. Societies that conceal whole worlds tend to feature top-notch dining.”

Steve's gaze sparked right away. “You're spot on. Let's check it out.”

Aurora concealed her grin with her palm. Knight inclined his head gravely, as though the idea held vital tactical value. Ragnar gave a casual lift of his shoulders and tagged along, while Ash eyed me in confusion over the shift before Ragnar tugged him too.

In mere moments, the whole party started wandering off, deliberately granting us privacy.

I observed their departure, sensing the setup snap shut on me.

North linked her arms and regarded me steadily. “So,” she remarked, “what required pulling me away so privately?”

I coughed lightly. “Well… the thing is…”

She paused expectantly.

I avoided her face entirely.

“I figured,” I expressed cautiously, “that following the demolition of a planet's hidden stronghold and prepping to strike seventy-two others… perhaps we might chat briefly?”

Her mouth turned upward.

“I'm listening.”

Once the group had drifted out of sight, the square fell into stillness. The strain that had hung in the atmosphere before had dissipated. Abor's overhead expanse retained that subtle purple tint from my dominance of the planetary core, and for the initial time since combat erupted, a basic truth dawned on me.

I felt at peace. No alerts blared. No foes rushed at me. No abrupt dangers forced choices. No pressing drive to power up.

It was solely her.

North positioned herself a short distance off, observing me with her customary composed demeanor, although a gentle spark lit her eyes.

I drew in a deep breath and advanced toward her.
