Chapter 6: Experimentation
This cultivation technique fails to generate even a single drop of an immortal's mana!
Despite his lack of practical experience in cultivation, Wang Ba understood that once a practitioner entered the Qi Refining stage, they were supposed to develop mana.
It was through this mana that various mystical spells could be manifested.
Consequently, mana served as the very bedrock for all cultivators.
And yet, this specific cultivation method had absolutely no connection to a cultivator's mana.
According to the text, the energy it cultivated was known as Yin Power.
Its primary functions were to strengthen the mind and cloud the intellect of others.
The remaining details were poorly explained.
Regarding the actual process of cultivation, it shared a striking resemblance to the Body Strengthening Scripture.
It was incredibly time-intensive!
Reaching just the first layer would demand at least a century of diligent cultivation.
Every subsequent level would take ten times longer than the one before it.
With only three layers in total, attaining the third layer would require no less than ten thousand years!
It was another lifespan-devouring technique. The worst part was that without sufficient perception, one might spend centuries or millennia without ever grasping the essence of this cultivation method.
Wang Ba shook his head slowly and tucked the gold paper away.
He was baffled as to where Old Sun had managed to find such a peculiar cultivation method.
While the ambiguity of its effects might be overlooked, the sheer cost was staggering.
He found it entirely unappealing.
Furthermore, since he was still in the middle of practicing the Body Strengthening Scripture, he lacked the spare time to waste on redundant cultivation methods.
"Right now, my priority must be breeding the Precious Chickens. That is the essential key for me to advance in the Body Strengthening Scripture."
Wang Ba proceeded to clear the chicken droppings from the manor and refilled the water in the feeding troughs.
Most of the chicken feed had already been consumed.
There was no requirement to provide more for the day.
Following his routine, he inspected the health and quantity of the hens, roosters, and chicks.
He also performed a count of the eggs.
Perhaps due to the rich concentration of spiritual energy, even eggs that had been sitting for months showed no signs of spoiling.
Additionally, the shells were so incredibly robust that they were difficult to break, making storage a simple task.
Old Sun had previously mentioned that the shells of fertilized eggs appear duller than unfertilized ones, and a gentle shake would reveal a faint sensation of movement inside.
Wang Ba did the math; this month’s quota was looking precarious, as he currently held just over 120 eggs.
"With less than ten days remaining in the month, and considering the laying rate of these Precious Chickens, hitting the 200-egg mark is going to be a struggle."
To his disappointment, not a single one of the three eggs collected today was fertilized.
Even so, he didn't let his spirits sink. Both the poultry manual and Old Sun had emphasized that breeding Precious Chickens was notoriously difficult. The roosters rarely showed interest in the hens, leading to very few successful matings.
Even human attempts to intervene, such as using aphrodisiacs, yielded almost no results.
Furthermore, even if an egg managed to hatch, the chicks were so delicate that they often died without any obvious cause.
Wang Ba, however, maintained his own theory on the matter.
In his previous life, poultry farming techniques had been refined to a science.
Though he hadn't been a farmer himself, he had picked up various bits of knowledge.
The death of chicks could usually be blamed on inherited defects in the eggs, disease, or fluctuating temperatures. Generally, these were problems that could be solved with the right methods.
The real bottleneck, however, was sparking the rooster's interest in the hen.
For the moment, Wang Ba was at a loss as to how to solve that particular problem.
"Playing matchmaker for chickens is certainly no easy feat."
Nevertheless, that was a problem for the future. The most pressing task was to confirm his current hypothesis.
After spending some time observing the flock, Wang Ba eventually selected four birds.
Using food as a lure, he managed to capture them after a bit of effort.
The group consisted of two roosters and two hens.
These four were in excellent health, nearly fully grown but not yet mature. Their ages were also quite similar.
Each had a remaining lifespan of approximately 19.5 years.
He designated them as Jia 1, Jia 2, Jia 3, and Jia 4.
Wang Ba then sacrificed 0.1 years, 0.2 years, 0.3 years, and 0.4 years of his own lifespan to these four chickens respectively.
Applying the 1-to-5 ratio, his contribution of 0.1 years would extend the lives of the Precious Chickens by 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 years respectively.
Their new lifespans should have been 20, 20.5, 21, and 21.5 years.
His next action was to mark them and release them back into the group.
Despite losing another year of his life, Wang Ba felt a faint sensation of having aged slightly.
Yet, his heart was filled with resolve.
That evening, he prepared a bowl of porridge, which tasted wonderful when paired with the pickles Old Sun had gifted him.
The night passed quickly.
The roosters began their morning crows.
Woken by the noise, Wang Ba hurried to retrieve the four specific Precious Chickens.
He was stunned to see that their lifespans had actually shifted!
In the same order, the values were now 20.7, 21.3, 21.7, and 22.1 years.
They had increased by 0.7, 0.8, 0.7, and 0.6 years respectively!
"There really is a change!"
Remarkably, every single one of them had undergone a transformation!
"Could my theory be correct? Does transferring my lifespan into them trigger some kind of fundamental evolution?"
Wang Ba was both shocked and elated.
He recalled how the large hen from before, after receiving his lifespan, had eventually transformed into the Spirit Chicken mentioned by Old Sun and Deacon Li.
Furthermore, that Spirit Chicken's lifespan had jumped from 20 years to nearly 60.
According to Old Sun, Spirit Chickens were classified as Immortal Birds, so a 60-year lifespan seemed appropriate.
If this was true, his ability to bestow life was truly incredible!
"I should wait and observe. There's no need to rush into things," Wang Ba told himself, calming his racing thoughts.
It was only then that he noticed the chicken feed he had left out the night before had been completely devoured.
These four Precious Chickens must have been the culprits.
The large hen had shown the same behavior, developing a massive appetite after the lifespan transfer.
This was likely a result of the transformation and an increased need for Spiritual Energy.
Wang Ba quietly analyzed the situation.
Before long, a donkey cart arrived, delivering a heavy load of Spirit Valley Bran, spirit bean cake, Spirit Stone Powder, and Spirit Fish bone meal.
Wang Ba first served the Precious Chickens the feed he had already fermented.
Next, he began the fermentation process for the newly arrived ingredients.
He also made sure to give a larger share of the discarded Spirit Insects to the four experimental chickens.
As he expected, they ate with ravenous hunger.
After a day of hard work,
Wang Ba noticed while cleaning up in the evening that all the feed he had scattered was gone!
"It appears these four Precious Chickens are on the verge of becoming Spirit Chickens," Wang Ba mused.
He decided not to provide any extra meals for them for the time being.
Excess could be just as harmful as deficiency, and overeating in a single sitting was never wise.
On the second morning, he brought the four chickens out as usual.
He was astonished to see the drastic physical changes they had undergone!
Their bodies had grown significantly larger and more robust, and their eyes held a distinct glimmer of spirituality.
While they weren't exactly highly intelligent yet,
They were undeniably more striking than the ordinary Precious Chickens surrounding them.
They stood out like a triton among minnows.
What pleased Wang Ba even more was that Jia 4, the hen who had received 0.4 years of his life, had successfully laid an egg!
"Excellent! Reaching 200 eggs by the end of the month should be achievable now."
Of course, the eggs weren't the most important factor.
The real focus remained on their lifespan!
The four chickens now showed lifespans of 24, 25.7, 25.6, and 26.3 years in their respective order.
In just one day, their lives had extended by 3.3, 4.4, 3.9, and 4.2 years!
"Could the rate of lifespan growth be tied to their food consumption?"
Wang Ba rubbed his chin, feeling quite perplexed.
However, the experiment had been running for too short a time to draw any definitive conclusions from the data.
And so, the days continued to pass.
By the eighth day,
"Wait, has the lifespan growth stopped?"
