Devouring Evolution: I Reborn as an Arctic Wolf Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Going Out Hunting.
Previously on Devouring Evolution: I Reborn as an Arctic Wolf...
In the brutal frost of the Arctic, survival is determined not just by raw power, but by keen observation.
Within this frozen wasteland, various small herbivores exist alongside the more prominent large predators.
The Arctic Rabbit is a primary example of these creatures.
Su Lin had originally intended to follow Wolf Dad and Wolf Mom on their hunt, but he quickly changed his plans during the journey.
His decision shifted after he stumbled upon several Arctic Rabbit nests along his path.
These rabbits are social creatures that live in groups.
While they aren't overflowing in population within the Arctic Circle, they are certainly not a rare sight.
Currently, Su Lin watched as a group of seven or eight Arctic Rabbits focused on eating the moss hidden beneath the blanket of snow.
"You'll be my meal today," he thought.
His eyes shimmered with anticipation as he observed the warren of different-sized rabbits laid out before him.
He recognized this as a family unit, with several juveniles emerging to find food.
In the wild, groups containing young offspring are frequently the primary targets for predators.
Su Lin felt no pity for them.
He understood that the law of the jungle—survival of the fittest—reigned supreme among wild beasts.
"System, scan their attributes."
Following his mental command, the data for the distant Arctic Rabbits materialized in his vision.
Species: Arctic Rabbit (Male).
Level: 3.
Qi-Blood: 320.
Endurance: 28.
Strength: 8.
Defense: 12.
Speed: 53.
...
Species: Arctic Rabbit (Female).
Level: 2.
Qi-Blood: 282.
Endurance: 16.
Strength: 5.
Defense: 9.
Speed: 47.
....
Scanning the group, Su Lin identified a dominant Level 3 male with the most impressive stats.
Its speed reached a daunting 53, and even the females possessed high velocity.
It was clear why Wolf Dad and Wolf Mom usually ignored these creatures.
Chasing such agile prey across the snow-covered terrain was simply too exhausting.
Given the size and nutritional needs of his parents, catching a few rabbits wouldn't satisfy their hunger, and the energy spent would far outweigh the caloric gain.
However, these factors didn't discourage Su Lin.
Su Lin possessed great speed himself, even surpassing the dominant rabbit's pace.
Furthermore, his physical strength was tied directly to his endurance.
He only needed a short rest and a bit of food to fully restore his stamina levels.
Therefore, even if he exhausted himself, catching a single rabbit would allow him to break even; catching two or more meant a significant profit.
Acting without delay, Su Lin lowered his body to the ground, keeping a silent watch on his targets.
"Catch the leader first," he decided, locking his sights on the dominant male.
Slowly, Su Lin began his approach.
The rabbits were clearly on high alert.
Sensing something, they twitched their ears and scanned the area, with the male rabbit hopping around and glancing toward Su Lin’s hiding spot.
This was likely the animal’s natural instinct warning it of looming danger.
Fortunately, Su Lin’s white fur provided perfect camouflage, allowing him to blend seamlessly into the snow while prone.
He remained motionless, waiting for the right moment.
Seeing no immediate threat, the rabbits relaxed and returned to their moss.
Su Lin resumed his slow advance.
He moved in segments—creeping forward, then pausing, then creeping forward again.
After a long period of patience, he managed to get within thirty meters of the group.
A nearby bush provided the necessary cover; without it, the wary rabbits would have spotted him long ago.
Su Lin began to mask his presence entirely.
At a distance of thirty meters, his superior speed should be enough to overcome the male rabbit’s reaction time.
He aimed for a decisive strike, hoping to kill several before the group could scatter, which would save him the energy of a long pursuit.
In this hunt, speed would be the deciding factor!
Su Lin took one final, slow step, tensing his muscles like a coiled spring.
He was as still as a statue, ready to become as fast as a lightning bolt.
In fact, Su Lin’s current speed was far beyond that of any common rabbit!
A white shadow blurred across the snow like a lightning strike, charging at the unsuspecting male rabbit while its head was still down.
"Roar!"
When Su Lin was ten meters away, the rabbit finally sensed the threat.
Su Lin let out a howl and pushed his acceleration to the limit.
The male rabbit began a desperate, panicked flight, darting in no particular direction.
However, between Su Lin’s preparation and his naturally superior speed, the rabbit stood no chance.
Ten meters was far too short a distance for the prey to escape his reach.
Closing the gap, he launched himself into the air, unsheathing his sharp Wolf Claws.
He pounced with full force, his heavy claws striking the male rabbit’s neck.
The impact combined 30 points of Strength with a 60 Speed bonus.
Such a blow would have injured a full-grown Arctic Wolf, let alone a small rabbit.
The sound of snapping neck bones echoed as the leader hit the snow, twitching as blood leaked from its face.
Su Lin didn't stop to celebrate; he immediately pivoted to chase the others.
The remaining rabbits had already begun to flee in all directions.
However, the juveniles were far slower than the adults.
Survival of the fittest.
Su Lin showed no mercy to the young ones, pouncing on them and crushing their spines with his claws.
....
Thirty minutes later.
"Roar!"
A long howl from the Arctic Wolf rang out over the blood-stained snow. The scattered carcasses told the story of a completely one-sided slaughter!
The harvest was significant.
He had successfully killed six rabbits in total.
One male, one female, and four juveniles.
After checking his kills, Su Lin—breathing heavily from the exertion—walked to the male rabbit and bit down with his Fanged Teeth.
"Ding! The host gains 1 Evolution Point for consuming an Arctic Rabbit."
The system’s voice encouraged Su Lin to eat even faster.
"Ding! The host gains 0.8 Evolution Points for consuming an Arctic Rabbit."
"Ding! The host gains 0.6 Evolution Points for consuming an Arctic Rabbit."
.....
While any food could provide Evolution Points, the initial consumption always yielded the highest amount.
The rewards gradually diminished as he continued to eat the same prey.
By the time he finished the male and one juvenile, the system notification had dropped to 0.1 points.
"Roar!"
Su Lin howled in satisfaction, feeling full after the two rabbits.
He stopped eating and scanned the horizon. He then gathered the remaining carcasses in his mouth and began the trek back to the cave.
Unbeknownst to Su Lin, his entire hunt had been watched by a researcher in a distant vehicle.
Inside the off-road truck, an explorer named Tiffany took a sip of tea and looked through her binoculars in awe. "Wow, look at that pure white, stunning Arctic Wolf. For a Lone Wolf to take down that many rabbits, its hunting prowess must be incredible. It might actually grow up to be a legendary Arctic Wolf King."
Tiffany made the comment lightheartedly, having no idea which pack the wolf belonged to.
She was also completely unaware that the predator she was praising was actually a cub only one month old.
